On March 27, 2025, the highly-anticipated movie “L2: Empuraan,” featuring Mohanlal as the main character, will be playing in cinemas. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, this film continues the story from the 2019 release of “Lucifer.
Featuring Tovino Thomas, Abhimanyu Singh, Manju Warrier, and several other prominent actors, this film offers well-crafted character progression. If you’re interested, take a look at the TopMob review before heading to the cinema to watch it!
The Plot:
In the continuation of the Lucifer trilogy, the movie titled Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal as the main character, delves into the world of the underworld and its hidden secrets. The political landscape of Kerala experiences turbulence following events in the initial part of the series.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I’m completely captivated by the intriguing tale that unfolds in this movie. It centers around Stephen Nedumpally, better known as Khureshi-Abr’aam, and his extraordinary journey navigating through chaos on every front. Simultaneously, we delve into the fascinating origins of Zayeed Masood, painting a compelling picture of two lives intertwined in a whirlwind of drama.
The Good:
Without a doubt, Empuraan stands out as a crisp and impactful entertainer. This film, being part of a three-part series, demonstrates significant improvement over its precursor and presents an unprecedented tone not commonly seen in Malayalam cinema.
In his starring performance, Mohanlal demonstrates yet again why he’s renowned as a superstar. The film, initiating with a religious conflict, mirrors our society in which emotionally charged religious sentiments are often manipulated for political gains.
This piece highlights how politics has seeped into the rural areas of Kerala, a skillfully crafted portrayal by author Murali Gopy who keenly observes the subject matter. The storyline emphasizes the timeless truth that “power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Additionally, the clever hints and concluding twist make it an engaging watch for viewers.
In a playfully critical manner, the portrayal of the L2: Empuraan narrative adds an extra layer of intrigue. At times, it carries a biblical-like quality. Furthermore, the film is rich with dialogue reminiscent of the original, offering delightful callbacks.
In terms of exceptional production quality, Prithviraj Sukumaran demonstrates yet again that he’s not only an outstanding actor, but also a gifted filmmaker.
As a devoted admirer, I must express my awe for the technical mastery that shines brightly in the film, Empuraan. Sujith Vaassudev’s visuals are nothing short of breathtaking, infused with Akhilesh Mohan’s exquisite editing that adds a unique charm to every scene. However, it is Deepak Dev’s musical talent that truly captures the essence of this movie. His ability to evoke awe and exhilaration in each frame leaves one yearning for more insights into his unparalleled skills and acclaimed reputation.
The Bad:
Watching Empuraan requires a second view to fully understand its details, but compared to its initial release, it seems less complex. Additionally, at times, events that were already clear were overly dramatized, making it feel like excessive explanation or over-explaining.
