L2 Empuraan: Amid ongoing debate, makers of Mohanlal-starrer likely to modify movie with 17 cuts

On March 27, 2025, the movie titled “Empuraan,” featuring Mohanlal in the main character, was released in theaters. As this movie made its way onto the silver screen, it sparked discussions about its depiction.

Presently, the creators plan to implement some changes. As reported by Manorama News, the movie is set to receive 17 edits before being re-evaluated for approval from the censorship board.

Based on the report, the creators chose to implement changes following criticism from various conservative groups. With the updated version now under Censor Board review, it’s expected to premiere in cinemas next week.

The revised edition is expected to reduce instances of violence towards women and eliminate controversial religious content. Moreover, Producer Gokulam Gopalan disclosed that he discussed modifications with Director Prithviraj Sukumaran to ensure no sensitive feelings are offended.

It’s thought that the choice to censor the movie again might be due to a heated online discussion. Additionally, a conservative media outlet claimed that the film contradicts their political ideology, which seems to fuel the ongoing debate about it.

Title Two: Empuraan is a political-action-thriller and the second part of the Lucifer trilogy. Five years after the events depicted in Lucifer (2019), this movie delves into how Kerala’s political and social environment has evolved, with those who hold power becoming increasingly corrupt.

In this upcoming movie, Mohanlal returns to his character, while Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Abhimanyu Singh, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jerome Flynn, Rick Yune, and others take on significant roles.

Moreover, work is underway on a third part titled “L3: The Beginning”. This upcoming sequel continues the storyline from the cliffhanger in L2 and also explores the background of the character Stephen Nedumpally.
