In an interview with Collider, Soller shared that he found out about Syril’s demise between seasons one and two. Creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy contacted him to share a plot outline for Syril and Dedra Meero (Denise Gough). Soller, who played Alfred Hillinghead in the Netflix series Bodies, explained that “Gilroy is laying everything out, but he chose to reveal it gradually. It’s clever and smart not to disclose everything from the start. So Gilroy tells everyone everything, but he knows when to tell everyone everything.

Since the first season, Andor has carefully fostered Syril’s fixation on himself. This escalated in Season 2 Episode 8, when Syril recognized Andor among a crowd of protesters on Ghorman and assaulted him. A brawl erupted, culminating in Syril aiming a gun at Andor. Before Syril could identify himself, he was fatally shot by Carro Rylanz, played by Richard Sammel.

In the interview under discussion, Soller pointed out that Syril expressed a wish to be recognized, but lamented he would likely be overlooked by history, not even meriting a footnote. He further explained that this sentiment reflects countless individuals throughout history who have accomplished significant deeds yet remain forgotten and unacknowledged.

When inquired about Syril’s potential involvement in the Rebellion, the actor labeled the character as “a romantic, fixated dreamer” and suggested he might have “strayed off to some distant place on his own.

Andor Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
