On June 20, 2025, the movie titled “Kuberaa,” starring Dhanush and Nagarjuna Akkineni in prominent roles, made its grand entrance at the cinemas. This film by Sekhar Kammula offers a gripping social thriller narrative. The story revolves around a beggar and a retired CBI officer whose lives become entangled due to a businessman’s relentless pursuit of power.
In Kuberra, we follow the tale of the wealthy Neeraj Mitra, portrayed by Jim Sarbh, a resident of bustling Mumbai, leading an opulent lifestyle. He harbors the conviction that celebrity equates to authority.
In the world of high-class social circles, the influential entrepreneur chanced upon an oil deposit in the Bay of Bengal. Eager to secure this find and boost his finances substantially over the next 15 years, he opted to bribe politicians with a whopping sum of Rs 1 lakh crore.
Yet, to accomplish this task, the businessman needs the skills of a retired CBI officer, who hails from a modest middle-class financial background. As this composed and strategic individual navigates the intricate labyrinth of scandal and deception, he devises a strategy for channelling the funds.
To achieve the same goal, the CBI officer, named Deepak (portrayed by Nagarjuna Akkineni), makes a plan to enlist several homeless individuals across the country as couriers for the money. During his search, he comes across a man named Deva who lives without a home.
Spoiler Alert
In the story, Deva (portrayed by Dhanush) is secretly drafted into a scheme and made to appear as a wealthy individual carrying around 100 billion rupees. Yet, in the course of events, the beggar comes to understand that Neeraj intends to eliminate not only him but also all the other beggars once the task is accomplished.
With a sense of urgency due to his life being at risk, the previously innocent Deva hastily seeks refuge, coincidentally encountering Sameera – a vibrant young girl who harbors ambitions and aspirations of her own.
In the hunt for Deva, instigated by Deepak, we get a glimpse into the harsh realities that street beggars face within our society. Moreover, flashbacks subtly reveal how an upright CBI officer was ensnared in corruption, transforming him from a noble figure to a mere chess piece in the intricate game of systemic deceit.
Deva chooses to distribute the 10000 crores he possesses among underprivileged members of society, as Neeraj continues to pursue him closely. In a surprising turn of events, a reformed Deepak aligns with the beggars, determined to thwart the businessman’s malicious strategies and put an end to this ongoing game for good.
