In a departure from the sparkling love story of Twilight, Kristen Stewart ventures back into the realm of vampires, yet this time it’s in a setting that bears little resemblance to the romance-laden Twilight universe (some might say there was an eerie aspect to Twilight as well). This fresh installment is characterized by a more somber tone, a grittier vibe, and an ’80s aesthetic.
A Vision “Between Fantasy and Nightmare”
In “Flesh of the Gods”, a chilling new horror-thriller helmed by director Panos Cosmatos (known for “Mandy”), we encounter Stewart and Oscar Isaac portraying a married couple who find themselves entangled in a perilous realm of sensual indulgence, enigma, and tantalizing supernatural charm.
The movie, penned by Andrew Kevin Walker (known for “Se7en”), unfolds in Los Angeles during the ’80s. It narrates the story of characters named Raoul and Alex, who are captivated by an enigmatic and alluring persona called The Nameless, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen.
Drawn into her hard-partying clique, they tumble into a nightmare full of bloodlust and punk rock.
“Like Los Angeles itself, Flesh of the Gods inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare,”
Cosmatos said in a statement.
He describes his vision as follows, promising a visceral experience:
“Both propulsive and hypnotic, Flesh will take you on a hot rod joy ride deep into the glittering heart of hell.”
A Cast Built For Complexity
Despite being widely recognized for the Twilight series, Stewart has demonstrated her versatility through emotionally profound and psychologically intricate roles. Her critically praised performances in Clouds of Sils Maria, Seberg, and her Oscar-nominated role in Spencer showcase her ability to portray complex women who struggle with a balance between vulnerability and defiance.
Her androgynous charm and gritty allure make her an ideal fit for a film that exudes sensual moodiness and vintage rock extravagance.
In the meantime, Oscar Isaac offers a commanding on-screen demeanor, honed through his performances in movies such as “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation.” He’s recognized for skillfully portraying characters grappling with internal struggles and profound existential themes.
With confidence, we believe Olsen, whose recent acting in ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Love & Death’ display her adaptability and captivating on-screen charm, will perfectly portray her character with an ideal mix of intrigue and ominous aura that the role demands.
High Ambitions, Cult Potential
Producer Adam McKay vividly expressed his excitement about the project:
“This director, this writer, these incredible actors, vampires, choice ’80s punk, style and attitude for miles… that’s the film we’re bringing you today. We think it’s wildly commercial and wildly artful. Our ambitions are to make a movie that ripples through popular culture, fashion, music and film. Can you tell how excited I am?”
Although no release date has been announced, the project is already building serious anticipation.
If you’re a fan of movies such as “Only Lovers Left Alive“, where elements like captivating music, stylish rock attire, and late-night party sequences hold equal importance to the storyline itself, then this might just be the next cult classic waiting to break through.
In essence, it appears that “Flesh of the Gods” goes beyond mere tales of vampires; it seems to delve into the allure and irresistible lure of the perils lurking in the darkness of the night.
