Kraven the Hunter: Who Is Chameleon? Marvel Villain & Powers Explained

As a seasoned gamer who has dabbled in countless Marvel-themed games and comics, I must say that the upcoming Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is shaping up to be quite an intriguing addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The introduction of Chameleon, a villain I have encountered in my comic book adventures, promises a layer of depth and complexity that we haven’t seen from the character before.

In Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter,” fans will get their first look at the Marvel villain, Chameleon, portrayed by Fred Hechinger. While diehard Spider-Man and Marvel enthusiasts might be acquainted with this character from the comics or other media, there are likely many who may not know much about Chameleon. They might be wondering about his origins, relationship to Kraven, as well as his capabilities and powers.

So who is Marvel’s Chameleon and what are his powers? Here is everything you need to know.

Who is Kraven’s Chameleon in Marvel and what are his powers?

In the world of Marvel Comics, the Chameleon serves as a foe for Spider-Man. His primary skill lies in his extraordinary talent for mimicking and assuming the identity of others.

Initially, Chameleon’s ability to disguise himself was achieved through intricate technology, realistic masks, and a transformative serum. Later on, he underwent surgical and mutagenic modifications which transformed his skin and coloring, granting him the power to imitate anyone at will.

Initially, the shape-shifting villain known as Chameleon pretends to be a government scientist named Professor Newton. Under this guise, he manages to purloin part of some missile blueprints. He subsequently reaches out to Spider-Man through his Spider-Sense, suggesting a business proposition in an indirect manner. But here’s the twist – Chameleon transforms into Spider-Man himself and snatches the remaining missile plans, making a quick getaway as Spider-Man arrives on the scene.

Initially, Spider-Man is falsely accused of theft, but he clears his name by capturing the Chameleon and delivering him to the authorities. But, shortly after, Chameleon pretends to be a police officer and panics Spider-Man by convincing other officers to attack him. However, because Spider-Man had torn a piece of his costume earlier, the police can see through Chameleon’s disguise and arrest him once again.

In his role as a criminal, Chameleon often collaborated with fellow adversaries of Spider-Man such as Kingpin, Hammerhead, and Kraven. After being expelled from the country, he found himself back in Russia for a while, but eventually made his way back to the United States where he resumed his life of criminal activity.

Is Chameleon the brother of Kraven the Hunter?

Chameleon is Kraven the Hunter’s half-brother.

It wasn’t until the famous comic book storyline “Kraven’s Last Hunt” that this relationship became known. The Chameleon, whose real name is Dmitri Smerdyakov, was born from an affair between Kraven’s father, Nikolai Kravinoff, and their servant Sonya Smerdyakov.

Regrettably, a strong competition emerged between the two, mainly because Nikolai tended to side more with Kraven than Dmitri. This rivalry, in turn, led Dmitri to develop low self-esteem and uncertainty, perceiving Kraven as an unattainable model he continually fell short of emulating.
