As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has eagerly anticipated the arrival of Kraven the Hunter on the big screen, I must admit my disappointment upon reading the reviews that have flooded in since its release. Having grown up with Sergei Kravinoff’s thrilling exploits in the pages of Marvel Comics, I had high hopes for this film to deliver a captivating and action-packed experience.
Following its premiere on December 12, 2024, the ratings for Sony’s movie Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the lead, have been made public after initial criticism for a weak narrative. The film delves into the intricate bond between Sergei Kravinoff, portrayed by Taylor-Johnson, and his father Nikolai Kravinoff, played by Russell Crowe. This complex relationship drives Sergei to adopt a fresh persona and assume the role of the title character.
Kraven the Hunter’s reviews call it a ‘self-inflicted killshot’
Following two-year delays and numerous postponements, Kraven the Hunter made its U.S. cinema debut on December 12. Unfortunately, this film hasn’t left a favorable impression on movie reviewers, who criticized it for falling short of expectations, as indicated in their unfavorable reviews.
Despite praising the film for its daring R-rated approach, as expressed by Jonathan Sim from Coming Soon, he pointed out that the movie Kraven the Hunter struggles with uneven pacing. In his critique, he mentioned, “The initial and subsequent acts sometimes move too slowly. However, the film becomes enjoyable when the action starts, because the dialogue scenes feel tedious.
In a contrasting view, David Fear from Rolling Stone argued in his review that Kraven the Hunter lacked purpose or significance. Fear claimed the movie’s script had been tampered with and overly manipulated in all the wrong places. He also pointed out that Kraven the Hunter was likely a fatal blow to Sony, self-inflicted in their efforts to produce the character.
Furthermore, according to David Ehrlich of IndieWire, the computer-generated imagery in the film transitioned from “charmingly animated” to “produced on the most cost-effective basis by a studio looking to minimize its expenditures.
Kraven’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores are as bad as Morbius
As per Rotten Tomatoes, the movie “Kraven the Hunter” garnered a dismal rating of 14%, which is one of the lowest scores in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, based on 56 critiques. However, it fared slightly better on Metacritic with a score of 33 out of 100, derived from 24 reviews.
The scores for this film are reminiscent of Morbius, another movie derived from a Spider-Man villain by Sony, which was launched in 2022. After its premiere, Morbius received a rating of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes (as reported by IndieWire). It’s worth mentioning that the film currently holds a 15% score on the Tomatometer and a 35 on Metacritic.
