As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for true crime narratives, I find myself captivated by the tragic tale of Kouri Richins. The chilling details of this case, reminiscent of a gritty video game plot twist, have me on the edge of my seat.

In March 2022, authorities unearthed the lifeless body of Eric Richins within his residence in Park City, Utah. Initial findings suggest that his wife, Kouri Richins, was the one who found the body and called emergency services. Following an autopsy on Richins’ corpse, the findings showed that he had succumbed to a fentanyl overdose. As the investigation progressed, the police detained Richins’ wife for the murder and charged her with homicide. Although Kouri Richins’ trial has yet to commence, court records indicate that she was involved in an extra-marital relationship with another man.

According to an autopsy report, ABC 4 News stated that Eric Richins consumed fentanyl orally, and the quantity in his system was five times deadlier than usual. A year following this incident, authorities captured Kouri Richins and indicted her for aggravated murder. Besides this, she was also charged with criminal homicide and three counts of attempting to distribute drugs illegally. Kouri Richins refuted all the accusations against her, claiming innocence. Nevertheless, court records showed that Kouri exchanged messages with a man and texted her suspected partner on the fateful night when Eric passed away.

As reported by CBS News, following the discovery of her deceased husband, Kouri Richins phoned 911 and shared what had happened with the operator. Initially, Kouri informed investigators that she mixed a cocktail for her husband before helping their son fall asleep due to his nightmares. Upon returning to their bedroom, however, she found her husband unresponsive and contacted the authorities.

As an enthusiastic observer, I’d rephrase it like this: During the bail hearing, the prosecution presented evidence against Kouri Richins, aiming to bring her to trial for her husband’s death. According to CBS News, several experts testified during the hearing and highlighted potential roles Kouri might have played in Eric’s demise. One of these experts brought attention to the Google searches Kouri conducted post-Eric’s death, which included queries like “can FBI find deleted messages” and “what is a lethal dose of fentanyl?” The defense, however, argued that those searches were merely curious inquiries made after Richins’ passing. Ultimately, the judge, upon hearing various testimonies, chose not to grant her bail and sent Kouri to jail instead.

Come August 2024, I learned with a heavy heart that I, Kouri Richins, author of a heartfelt children’s book on grief following my husband’s passing, will be facing trial.
