Korea's Prince of Asia Jang Keun-suk makes his return to TV in Netflix's The Influencer

As a long-time fan of Jang Keun-suk and his illustrious career spanning over two decades, the news of his participation in “The Influencer” was nothing short of exhilarating! From his heartwarming roles in “Beethoven Virus,” “You’re Beautiful,” and “Love Rain” to his electrifying performances on stage, I’ve been captivated by his talent since the early days.

On August 6th, Netflix debuted the initial four episodes of its new Korean reality competition series titled The Influencer. This show focuses on 77 prominent Korean influencers competing in a social survival contest to demonstrate their impact and determine who holds the greatest sway. The sole survivor will not only earn the title of the ultimate influencer but also pocket a substantial reward of 300 million won.

In this reality show, the contestants will take part in different tasks or challenges. The ones who lose these challenges get eliminated. Initially, there are 77 participants, but only 30 influencers make it through to the next round after the first round of eliminations. This means that 47 contestants were eliminated during the initial round, making for a significant reduction in the total number.

As a passionate fan, let me share that the social survival game I’m following has an impressive lineup, with so many talented individuals involved it would take forever to mention them all. However, some names that have caught my attention are RISABAE, PaniBottle, Shim Euddeum, Sia_jiwoo, and KEJIMIN. Yet, the participant that has me most intrigued for this reality series is none other than Korea’s very own Prince of Asia, Jang Keun-suk. Can’t wait to see what he brings to the table!

It turns out, contrary to initial impressions, he isn’t the host or guest star of the show. Instead, he’s one of the actual contestants! This surprise left even the other influencers stunned during the premiere. When introduced among the 76 contestants, Jang Keun-suk appeared with a cue card, leading viewers and fellow competitors to assume he was the host. However, after introducing himself, he stepped off stage briefly before reappearing wearing a neckband. He then announced that he was actually the 77th influencer participating in the game as well.

Despite being a freshman influencer on YouTube, his renowned reputation quickly put him at odds with the other competitors, prompting some to wish for his swift elimination. However, without giving away the outcome of the series, you’ll need to tune in to the episodes to discover his destiny. As one of his supporters, we eagerly anticipate his progress!

Known South Korean performer Jang Keun-suk excels both as an actor and singer. His outstanding performances can be seen in Korean dramas such as “Beethoven Virus,” “You’re Beautiful,” “Marry Me, Mary!”, “Love Rain,” “Bel Ami,” “The Royal Gambler,” and “Switch.” He also achieved success in Japan with his singing career. However, a tax evasion controversy led to a temporary break from the spotlight in 2015. Despite being acquitted, he chose to step back. In 2016, he returned to the entertainment scene as a host and mentor on the hit South Korean music competition show “Produce 101.”

His latest acting role was portraying Goo Do-han in the action web series “Decoy,” which debuted in 2023. Currently, he’s back on television screens, competing in Netflix’s new reality show, “The Influencer.” Could he emerge victorious among the competitors and claim the 300 million won grand prize? Catch the action by streaming “The Influencer” on Netflix.
