Kong: Survivor Instinct Returns Us To Awful Movie Tie-In Games

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt and a deep-rooted love for all things monster and kaiju, I must confess that my initial reaction to Kong: Survivor Instinct is one of cautious skepticism.

The upcoming video game titled “Kong: Survival Instinct” is part of Legendary’s ongoing MonsterVerse. In this new adventure, you’ll be assuming the role of a father searching for his daughter, while the beloved ape takes care of all the thrilling actions.

What is Kong: Survivor Instinct?

Following the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, the game Survivor Instinct casts you as a father on a quest to find his daughter, Stacy. Scheduled for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, this side-scrolling adventure has you navigating through drab, grey landscapes by leaping, attacking, and firing your way past obstacles.

Throughout the course of the game, you’ll run into several monstrous creatures, often referred to as Titans. The famous King Kong will make an appearance, possibly aiding or obstructing your journey, along with unique versions of these Titans. In the initial trailer for the game, a gigantic insect-like creature is featured, but it’s not the MUTO from Godzilla 2014. Interestingly, there’s no sign of Godzilla in this game at all.

Rather than surpassing Skull Island: Rise of Kong in 2023, Survivor Instinct seems poised to join the MonsterVerse’s game collection as another surprising addition. In essence, it appears to be a less polished, less aesthetically pleasing version of Deadlight, a game that debuted on Xbox Live Arcade a dozen years ago.

Hey, Where’s Godzilla?

In the MonsterVerse, the video game Kong: Survivor concentrates solely on one half of its renowned pair, King Kong. Given that both Godzilla and Kong have been central figures in the MonsterVerse on screen, it’s surprising to find only Kong as the star of the games. This disparity may be due to Toho, who hold the rights for Godzilla, having stringent quality standards that need to be fulfilled before he can appear in these games.

Currently, Kong: Survivor Instinct seems unremarkable to most people. However, enthusiasts of kaiju games, like myself, are probably going to savor the taste of what’s being served. Can I have seconds, please?
