As a long-time fan of Hideo Kojima and his groundbreaking work, I am beyond excited about the future of game adaptations and the evolving relationship between films and games. Kojima’s recent foray into Hollywood is a testament to his visionary talent and passion for storytelling across multiple mediums. His collaboration with Guillermo del Toro, Norman Reedus, and Jordan Peele promises an incredible fusion of gaming and filmmaking that we have never seen before.
In a recent chat with Variety, renowned game creator Hideo Kojima provided insight into what we might expect when it comes to the future of movie-based video games, as well as changes that could occur between films and gaming. Here’s a summary of his fascinating views on this topic!
Kojima making inroads in Hollywood
Hideo Kojima has just sealed a deal with talent agency WME, paving the way for him to enter Hollywood. His love for cinema has long been apparent in his video games, and now he’s making it a reality by collaborating with several renowned Hollywood figures, including Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus. Notably, he’s also teaming up with Jordan Peele on a horror game titled OD.
Maybe once I’m in the third phase after Physint, I might be directing a movie, or Kojima Productions maybe making a movie. Who knows!
Physint is another project from Kojima Productions, this time a stealth game.
In terms of Death Stranding, he explicitly expressed his desire to move past the conventional approach of turning a game into a movie.
It won’t be like expansions onto multiple platforms or a simple game-to-film or film-to-game adaptation like before.
According to Kojima, we can expect the boundaries between films and video games to blur, giving rise to an entirely novel form of entertainment.
Regarding Death Stranding, even though we may not fully grasp its meaning yet, we’ll likely gain some understanding once it premieres in cinemas. However, for the record, Hideo Kojima will contribute to the project, but he won’t be the one directing the movie specifically.
I’ll supervise the plot and help them make it, but I won’t direct it.
Although Hideo Kojima may not currently be in the director’s chair for the Death Stranding movie, his increasing involvement in Hollywood suggests that he could soon take on a directorial role. We’re eagerly anticipating this development!
