As a long-time Venom fan who has followed the character’s journey since his early comic book days, I must say, I am thrilled to see Knull being teased as a major player in Venom: The Last Dance. The director’s reassurance that this is just the beginning for Knull and not a one-and-done villain has me eagerly anticipating what the future holds for this iconic god of symbiotes.
Contrary to what was heavily emphasized in its promotion, the director of “Venom: The Last Dance” has clarified that Knull will not serve as the movie’s primary antagonist, but instead, he has a more significant role beyond this film.
According to director and co-writer Kelly Marcel in an interview with IGN, they are well aware of the significance of the character Knull for Venom. Hence, Marcel hints that this movie serves as a start, implying there’s more to explore about the iconic god in future installments.
What did Venom 3’s director say about Knull?
Marcel mentioned that while we had been familiar with Knull, it was important for us to establish the basis for Venom’s character and his bond with Eddie first, before bringing in Knull. This is merely the start of Knull’s story,” he explained.
Marcel mentioned that we’ve entered a part of the story where surprises might be expected, but he hopes the excitement of discovering it first-hand remains intact. However, given how significant Knull is to fans, he believes they’ve established a solid base, similar to what they did for Venom. He further stated that Knull, being immensely powerful, is not a character for a ‘one and done’ appearance.
Regarding the anticipation for Knull’s role in the film, Marcel hints that the movie merely skims over “the initial chapters of his narrative” and primarily focuses on him as a persistent, ominous presence lurking in the background.
In this movie, we get a glimpse into the character Knull’s origins, but his full tale is yet to be unfolded. Marcel pointed out that Marvel often builds its most formidable villains gradually, and here, Knull serves as the menacing force that pushes Eddie and Venom’s bond to its breaking point. However, it’s their partnership and relationship that forms the core of this narrative.
In “Venom: The Last Dance,” Tom Hardy returns to the movie series, taking on his character Eddie Brock once more. Additionally, other notable actors joining him in this film include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach, and Stephen Graham.
In “The Last Dance,” director Marcel makes his debut with a full-length film, having previously written scripts for the first two movies. The third edition of this series will bring back Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy in the dual roles of Eddie Brock and the main symbiote character, from “Mad Max: Fury Road.
Venom: The Last Dance is set to release in theaters on October 25, 2024.
