Knuckles 4K Review: An Even Sharper Echidna

Knuckles 4K Review: An Even Sharper Echidna

As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a penchant for high-definition visuals, I’ve been thrilled to add Knuckles 4K UHD to my collection. Coming from someone who grew up with the Sonic games on Sega Genesis, this spin-off has been an unexpected delight.

This year on Paramount+, Idris Elba starred in the title role of the echidna warrior Knuckles, a six-part event series. Now you can bring home this Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off in stunning 4K quality! If you’re someone who values high-definition viewing, it’s the optimal way to own this series, and it includes all the bonus features found in the Blu-ray release.

Set between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, this story focuses on Knuckles, played by Idris Elba, embarking on a humorous and thrilling quest of personal growth. He decides to mentor Wade (Adam Pally) and impart his knowledge as an Echidna warrior. The synopsis goes on to mention that this film stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessy as Tails, and Tika Sumpter as Maddie, among others. Joining the cast are Edi Patterson from The Righteous Gemstones, Rory McCann from Game of Thrones, Cary Elwes from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Christopher Lloyd from Back to the Future, and Paul Scheer from Black Monday.

The six episodes of “Knuckles” are genuinely entertaining. Idris Elba does an excellent job reprising his character from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and there are brief appearances by Sonic and Tails in the initial episode. Subsequently, the series mainly revolves around Knuckles and his apprentice, Wade, who struggles with significant paternal issues. Despite its lower budget compared to the movies, it’s a hilarious buddy comedy with impressive action sequences that really shine in 4K resolution, as Knuckles proves to be an unstoppable force when given free rein.

In the series, Adam Pally’s character Wade is consistently funny, but things become particularly engaging towards the end when he encounters his long-lost professional bowler father, portrayed by the consistently exceptional Cary Elwes. Kid Cudi assumes a villainous role and offers numerous opportunities for both mischief and humor, delighting fans of both his music and acting endeavors. Additionally, there’s an unexpected cameo from Michael Bolton, keeping viewers on their toes as they follow the Knuckles show. The series is nothing if not unpredictable and I’m looking forward to re-watching it, thanks to its 4K release.

The 4K disc for Knuckles comes with approximately 12 minutes of extra content. Much of this has been shown before, such as a round of “this or that?” and the cast imitating the red echidna character. However, what’s fresh here is a seven-and-a-half-minute blooper reel, which is genuinely amusing due to its outtakes. Additionally, you’ll get a sneak peek at the puppet version of Knuckles they used during filming, making it an excellent extra feature.

Knuckles 4K Review: Final Verdict

In essence, the Knuckles 4K edition doesn’t boast as impressive packaging as the Blu-ray SteelBook, but if superior image quality is your top priority, then opt for the 4K version. The series and its dynamic action scenes are stunning in 4K resolution, making it an ideal choice to rewatch before the third film premieres in theaters later this year.
