Kirik Party lyricist and notable Kannada writer HS Venkatesh Murthy passes away at 80

As a connoisseur of culture and the arts, I’ve long admired the indelible impact of HS Venkatesh Murthy on Kannada literature and cinema. A multitalented scholar, he was not only a gifted professor but also a master dialogue writer, lyricist, poet, and novelist. His versatile expertise spanned beyond these realms, making him a true literary titan. Sadly, this legendary figure has now left us at the age of 80.

HS Venkatesh Murthy dies at 80

According to the news, it appears that HSV was experiencing health problems related to his advanced age. He was 80 years old and sadly passed away on the morning of May 30, 2025, at a private hospital located in Kengeri, Bengaluru.

Word has spread with sadness through literary communities and the Kannada film industry about his passing. His departure creates a noticeable gap, highlighted by the remarkable works he left us.

HS Venkatesh’s career so far

Starting in 1944, HS Venkatesh Murthy spent more than three decades teaching at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. During that period, he also pursued and received his doctorate in Bengaluru.

In the role of an author, Hari Sadurnappa Venkataramana (HSV) has published more than a hundred books in the Kannada language. One of his plays, titled “Hoovi,” was also chosen to be included in the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) syllabus for students studying Kannada in ninth and tenth grades.

HSV’s contributions to films

Apart from his work with books and literature, HS Venkatesh Murthy is known for substantial contributions to the Kannada film industry and TV dramas as well.

He functioned as a song lyricist for numerous well-known movie tunes, such as the track “Thoogu Manchadalli Koothu” from the film Kirik Party starring Rashmika Mandanna.

For his exceptional work, the senior writer was bestowed with the Bala Puraskar Award from the Central Sahitya Akademi among numerous other recognitions. Additionally, he clinched the Filmfare Award for Best Kannada Lyricist in 2018-19 for his contributions to the film Hasiru Ribbon.
