Bollywood director Kiran Rao recently shared that she’s been enjoying many Malayalam films, particularly the movie “Bramayugam” starring Mammootty which she highly appreciates.
During an interview with ANI, the director of Laapataa Ladies expressed that she often finds herself captivated by the daringness of the storylines in many Malayalam movies.
Their horror films, such as the movie Bramayugam starring Mammootty, are uniquely artistic, blending local folklore and folk tales from Kerala. It presents a fresh concept, and their dedication to telling unique stories is evident. I believe this commitment is what sets them apart.
In a different phrasing: “Bramayugam, featuring Mammootty as the main character, is a period movie that blends elements of horror and folklore, penned and helmed by Rahul Sadasivan. The plot unfolds in the 17th-century Malabar region, where Thevan, a wandering minstrel, manages to evade capture by Portuguese conquerors by being traded into slavery.
Due to certain events, a man ends up living in an enigmatic mansion belonging to Kodumon Potti. Yet, as time passes, he comes to understand that Potti harbors secrets far beyond his initial impressions, and a shadowy mystery seems to surround him.
In addition to Mammootty, the movie features Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, Manikandan R Achari, and others in significant parts. Moreover, the film is rich with themes of Kerala’s spiritual mysteries, mythology, and folklore.
Kiran Rao praised South Cinema for the bold storytelling approaches taken by its filmmakers. She added that, being relatively smaller industries, Southern filmmakers focus on reflecting their unique cultural, linguistic, and communal aspects in their films.
The filmmaker additionally emphasized that people eagerly attend screenings of such movies, thereby forging links with the creators. Conversely, Kiran pointed out that Bollywood productions aim to appeal to a broad spectrum of viewers and are often motivated by their desire for success in all regions, which can result in a propensity towards remakes.
