Kingdom Hearts co-creator is working on Resident Evil Survival Unit, a new ‘survival horror strategy’ game

It’s exciting to learn that a fresh Resident Evil strategy game is underway, marking an innovative departure within the enduring survival horror series. To make things even more intriguing, the development of this project has been entrusted to none other than Shinji Hashimoto – one of the co-creators of Kingdom Hearts!

Resident Evil Survival Unit announced

Following the unveiling of Resident Evil: Requiem, the ninth primary installment in the franchise, the game titled Resident Evil Survival Unit is being crafted at this moment by the joint efforts of studios Joycity and Aniplex alongside Capcom, taking players once more to Raccoon City.

Not much information has been shared yet about the forthcoming strategy game, but it’s confirmed that its title will debut initially on smartphones. Capcom is set to disclose further details about this upcoming mobile game on July 10, 2025, at 10 PM UTC or 11 PM UK time, and 6 PM Eastern Time.

Based on the provided image for the project, it appears that Survival Unit might incorporate the classic Umbrella Corporation to some extent (not referring to New Umbrella). As a mobile-focused game, there could potentially be gacha mechanics included, introducing characters from various points in the franchise’s timeline. However, this has not been definitively confirmed yet.

Ever since the thrilling launch of Resident Evil 7 in 2016, it’s been an absolute rollercoaster ride for this beloved franchise! Mainstream games have been flying off the shelves like hotcakes, raking in huge sales figures. Yet, surprisingly, the spin-offs haven’t quite managed to match that success, despite Capcom pouring considerable resources into them.

It turns out that Resident Evil: Resistance, which came packaged with the remake of RE3 (Resident Evil 3) as a multiplayer PvE game, didn’t gain much popularity. Similarly, RE:Verse, a PvP spin-off included with RE8 (Resident Evil Village), has been closed down only a few years after its launch.

Although some fans might not find a spin-off like Survival Unit particularly appealing, given its mobile roots, it’s intriguing to observe Capcom pushing the boundaries with the series. In fact, their past experimentation has led to the creation of both dreadful games, such as Survivor on PS1, and successful ones, like Revelations and Outbreak.
