Film producer Andy Paterson has requested that either Netflix makes public or locates another platform for the shelved Gore Vidal film featuring Kevin Spacey, a project they have reportedly sworn never to bring back.
What do we know about Kevin Spacey’s Gore Vidal movie?
In the year 2017, it became public knowledge that Spacey was to feature in a movie called Gore, playing the role of Gore Vidal, a well-known author celebrated for his sharp wit and novels scrutinizing American societal and sexual norms. The film was adaptation from Jay Parini’s biography Empire of Self, but its production was subsequently halted by the streaming service after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against Spacey in 2017.
After almost a whole decade since the film’s termination, the producer Paterson has expressed his ongoing interest in the project to IndieWire. He shared that he has frequently requested Netflix to take action with the movie, but they consistently assert they have no intention of doing so.
Paterson stated that he has consistently requested Netflix to either stream the movie or transfer its rights to another party. They’ve responded by saying they have no plans to release the film or sell it. This response strikes many in the creative community as unusual. The viewers, including those who paid for the Netflix subscription to watch this film, should be given the choice to decide if they want to see it.
Paterson expressed his confusion as to why Netflix still hosts seasons of House of Cards, featuring Spacey, or other movies led by Spacey, while being firm about not releasing Gore.
Paterson stated, “Netflix claims they uphold artistic freedom, but refuse to disclose why this movie is hidden while they still stream House of Cards seasons 1-5 and various Kevin Spacey films. Their initial reason for rejecting my request is that the film was a tax write-off, which seems easy to rectify. I reiterate my plea: if you won’t air the film, provide another avenue for audiences to view this compelling and engaging portrayal of several issues central to discussions on sex, power, and creativity.
Currently, it appears that the release of Gore may not happen anytime soon. Instead, Netflix has opted to store the movie away in their archive and record it as a loss for their financial records.
