This week, filmmaker Kevin Smith expressed gratitude on Instagram towards the firefighters who promptly tackled the Sunset Fire in Runyan Canyon. Thanks to their swift action, they managed to save his house from the flames.
What did Kevin Smith say in his video?
In a video filmed above the Canyon, Smith commended the firefighters, referring to them as “angels”, for their swift response to the fire. He narrated an incident where, just before his evacuation from his home, he witnessed a “wall of fire” on Runyan Canyon’s ridge; this canyon stretches towards Hollywood.
Taking a moment here to extend my deepest gratitude – an enormous, sincere one – to the Los Angeles Fire Department, as well as other local responders. It’s been reported that firefighters have traveled from places like Oregon and Las Vegas to help battle these LA fires. As for Runyon Canyon, it sits atop a hill, with Hollywood nestled below. But the heroic firefighters, truly divine in their actions, were seen in planes. These planes seemed to collect water from reservoirs and then showered Runyon Canyon, swiftly extinguishing the fire. I can’t express my appreciation enough for what they’ve done.
Following his departure from home amidst the inferno, Smith expressed his belief that his house wouldn’t survive the flames. He had even imagined returning to find nothing but ruins.

Smith remarked, ‘It seemed like everything we had was gone. Yet, as long as we have our lives, our dogs, and our child is safe, I suppose that’s what matters most.’ He had anticipated returning home to find a heap of ashes instead. Smith added, ‘Someone said angels must be watching over you,’ he said. ‘They were – they wore peculiar hats and boots, and they battled the flames.’
5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening saw the initial report of the Sunset Fire near Wattles Park, Los Angeles. Within an hour, it had consumed more than 40 acres of greenery. Firefighters managed to control the fire within a day, and by Thursday, all evacuation notices for the surrounding area were rescinded. However, firefighters continued to monitor potential rekindling spots in the vicinity.
Over the past week, the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles have been labeled as the most expensive wildfire events ever recorded in the U.S., with projected economic losses exceeding $150 billion due to damages. Approximately 10,000 structures were lost amidst these fires, including numerous buildings from the Pacific Palisades Fire that scorched over 20,000 acres and largely obliterated the Pacific Palisades district of Los Angeles.
To assist individuals impacted by the fires, numerous charitable organizations have established straightforward means for aid distribution. Among these are the American Red Cross, United Way of Greater Los Angeles, Emergency Network LA, Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and numerous others.
