Kevin Feige recently shared insights about the future of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and his ideas for recasting iconic Marvel characters as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to evolve. In a recent interview, he discussed long-term franchise plans and hinted at a potential reboot following Avengers: Secret Wars. He also highlighted the importance of integrating the X-Men into the MCU, which he believes will be a pivotal moment for fresh faces taking on classic roles.
Kevin Feige on when Marvel’s classic heroes will see new actors
At Marvel Studios’ headquarters in Burbank, Kevin Feige made it clear they plan to replace iconic characters such as Iron Man and Captain America at some point. He specifically mentioned the X-Men franchise as the likely setting for these recastings (as reported by Deadline).
Feige talked about the wider future of the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars, revealing that Marvel plans to refresh certain timelines and essentially rejuvenate the universe. This revamp will create space for fresh takes on iconic characters. He pointed out that this strategy mirrors other significant film franchises which have periodically introduced new faces playing established roles over time.
It was disclosed that Feige discussed with Robert Downey Jr. the possibility of him taking on a new role, Doctor Doom, before the premiere of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. As he stated, “I had actually initiated conversations with Robert regarding this audacious concept before Ant-Man 3 was even released.” Now, Downey Jr. will depict the renowned villain in Avengers: Doomsday, having replaced Kang the Conqueror as the main antagonist.
Kevin Feige emphasized that Marvel is shifting its strategy towards quality rather than quantity. He stated, “From 2007 to 2019, we created approximately 50 hours of content. However, in the six years since ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ we’ve produced more than 100 hours of stories – that’s too much for us.” Moving forward, Marvel plans to release one to three films per year, along with a decreased output on Disney+.
In terms of maintaining the storylines of established characters, Feige mentioned that Marvel might invite actors from previous movies to reprise their roles. Put simply, if we have talented actors portraying beloved characters, it could be enjoyable to witness them appearing in various stories.
