Kevin Bacon Wanted to Star in Spinal Tap 2 but ‘Didn’t Get the Part’

Kevin Bacon expressed his interest in appearing in “This Is Spinal Tap 2,” or “Spinal Tap II: The Saga Goes On,” but ultimately wasn’t cast for the role.

The upcoming film titled “Spinal Tap II: The Saga Persists” is a sequel to the 1984 classic “This Is Spinal Tap,” which Rob Reiner directed. In this new movie, Christopher Guest takes on the role of Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean plays David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer portrays Derek Smalls, and Fran Drescher steps into Bobbi Flekman’s shoes. Additionally, Rob Reiner will reprise his role as Martin “Marty” Di Bergi.

What did Kevin Bacon say about Spinal Tap 2?

On The View, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, Bacon expressed his desire to portray one of the exploding drummers in the upcoming Spinal Tap movie. However, he lamented that he didn’t have Rob’s contact information. Bacon and Reiner had previously collaborated on the 1992 film A Few Good Men.

He mentioned someone spoke to him on my behalf, but unfortunately, I didn’t land the role. Speaking of Spinal Tap, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for part two! You might recall that in the original series, it was a recurring gag that their drummers would come and go.

In the upcoming movie Spinal Tap 2, the storyline unfolds as the fictional heavy metal band gets back together after a 15-year break for one last performance. Rob Reiner reprises his role as Marty DiBergi, the filmmaker who joins them on tour, and music greats like Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood make special appearances.

The sequel to Spinal Tap, titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” is scheduled for release in U.S. cinemas on September 12, 2025, distributed by Bleecker Street.

Meanwhile, the classic film “This Is Spinal Tap” can be streamed on Xumo right now. This movie, which was Riner’s first foray into feature film directing, is most famously associated with the term “up to eleven,” a humorous reference to how Nigel Tufnel’s guitar amplifiers are labeled from zero to eleven instead of the usual zero to ten.
