The design is intentionally simple, focusing on a pleasant balance with the nearby environment. Its boxy shape and corrugated rooftop resemble local farm buildings and huts, yet they also pay tribute to the area’s historical background. A unique circular skylight adorns the rooftop, allowing sunlight to enter the upper-level bedroom and creating a captivating spatial sensation.
In this structure, an expansive, open hearth serves as a focal point, tying the whole building together. The design incorporates substantial concrete blocks rising from the earth, mimicking the surrounding hills and blending them into the architectural scheme. These concrete elements underpin a set of cedar-covered spaces with a minimalist metal roof, emphasizing the balance between sturdiness and coziness.
As a nature-loving fan, I appreciate how the design cleverly positions structural concrete elements away from the building’s edge, fostering a seamless connection with the great outdoors. This thoughtful arrangement mimics the Japanese concept of engawa – a covered transition zone similar to a verandah – creating an uninterrupted perimeter space that effortlessly blends indoor and outdoor realms.
