Kennedy Yanko‘s sculptures represent a balance between power and submission, skillfully crafted from repurposed metal and paint skins that appear as if they are made of fabric. The artist is on the brink of unveiling a dual exhibition in New York at Salon 94 and James Cohan Gallery. These galleries will collaborate to showcase two separate solo exhibitions, with one held at each gallery, signifying a significant phase in Yanko’s exploration of material and message in her art.
Beginning in Tribeca, the exhibition titled Epithets unfolds at James Cohan, delving into the psychological landscape of color and form. Employing obsidian blacks, mirrored chrome, and weathered metals, her pieces, reminiscent of artifacts excavated from the subconscious, stand as unprocessed records of untamed forces. In a recent statement, she expressed that “for the first time in a long while, the work is visceral.” She went on to explain, “I delved into the deepest recesses within me and dared to peer beneath the surface, at what I knew was simmering but couldn’t bring myself to face.
Relocating to uptown, the “Retro Future” permeates every corner of Salon 94’s three-story Upper East Side townhouse, making it her largest exhibition yet. This collection combines elements from ancient statues, mid-century metalwork, and post-minimalist designs, with flowing shapes and splashes of color defining the essence of this work. It showcases the broad scope of Yanko’s sculptural imagination. In harmony with the solo presentation, the gallery will also host “Metal and Memory”, a group exhibition curated by the artist. This show will bring together artistic predecessors and those who follow in their footsteps, such as John Chamberlain, Suzanne Jackson, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Frank Stella, Leonardo Drew, James Dinerstein, and Kiah Celeste.
The two shows, Epithets and Retro Future, will make their debut on April 5. Both exhibitions will be available to the public until May 10 for Epithets, and May 3 for Retro Future.
