As a seasoned TV enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall of countless shows, I must say that the upcoming CBS drama, Matlock, has piqued my interest like no other. The return of Kathy Bates to our screens as Matty Matlock, a septuagenarian legal eagle, promises an underdog story that’s both captivating and refreshing.
In an exciting development, CBS is eagerly awaiting the premiere of “Matlock,” set to air on Sunday, Sept. 22, with a permanent slot on Thursdays starting Oct. 10. Kathy Bates takes on the lead role in this new procedural series. The actress has hinted that “This isn’t your typical ‘Matlock,'” playfully acknowledging that the show is not a rehash of the beloved Andy Griffith program. In fact, the CBS drama casually nods to its predecessor as a tribute to the legacy it inherits.
Instead of being a well-known lawyer, Matty Matlock (played by Madeline Bates) is making a comeback after stepping away from the profession in the ’90s. This puts our protagonist in an underdog position, as her age seems to be working against her in people’s expectations. However, Matty intends to turn these assumptions on their heads by demonstrating her worth through her actions. In a sneak peek provided by the network for “Conversations Between Stars,” Bates hinted that the series will offer an unexpected twist.
There’s all of this other stuff going on, all of these layers that I really can’t talk about. I can say that this is a procedural but that it has an overarching mystery that’s going on and a kind of mission that’s happening. I really want people to see the pilot and be excited because that’s what really knocked my socks off when I read it. I thought ‘Wow, okay. This is not just about a case being solved every week. It’s a whole ‘nother layer and that’s what I admire so much about the writing. It’s all intricately put together. Things echoing back to one another.
Introducing a mystery element adds an exciting twist to the series _Matlock_. It seems the upcoming premiere is where this enigma will unfold. Maybe we’ll discover why Matty, known for her sharp legal mind, is rekindling her career after a hiatus. In the show’s description, she’s billed as an “exceptionally intelligent senior” who enjoyed great success in her youth, but the reasons behind her return to practice remain unexplained.
From what we’ve gathered about the series, Matty often employs her age as a strategic asset. This skill of hers played a crucial role in securing her position at the law firm. Being perceived as innocuous allows her to eavesdrop on discussions or coax information out of people who wouldn’t typically share such details if they thought they were speaking with anyone other than a seemingly sweet, elderly Southern woman. The fact that they underestimate her cunning nature, seeing only an innocent old lady, often works to their disadvantage or her advantage, depending on the context.
As a gamer, let me share my perspective on one of the characters I encounter in this game world: Olympia, portrayed by Skye P. Marshall, is a seasoned lawyer who’s not only a heavy-hitter when it comes to bringing justice but also a rainmaker. At first, my character and hers don’t see eye to eye, but as the story unfolds, a mutual respect develops between us.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the dynamic duo working alongside Matty at Bates – David Del Rio as Billy and Leah Lewis as Sarah. In their roles as the energetic young associates, they are learning the ropes from Matty. Sarah, brimming with ambition, expresses her delight at being partnered with Matty instead of a senior partner. On the other hand, Billy, with his captivating charm, seems to take the situation more casually.
