As a long-time user of Kaspersky antivirus, I’m feeling a sense of disappointment and uncertainty following the recent announcement that the company will withdraw its services from the US. I’ve relied on Kaspersky for years to protect my computer from various malware threats and have been satisfied with its performance. However, the ongoing political tensions between Russia and the US have led to this ban, which leaves me feeling powerless in the face of geopolitical forces.
As a devoted user of Kaspersky antivirus based in the US, I regretfully announce that we’ll soon have to make a change due to unfortunate circumstances. The Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) under the Department of Commerce has decided to prohibit the sale of Kaspersky Lab products within the US. This decision stems from alleged connections to the Russian government and concerns regarding data collection and potential weaponization against American users. Instead of engaging in a lengthy battle, Kaspersky has chosen to withdraw their services from the US effective later this July.
The Business Intelligence and Security (BIS) made public its decision to prohibit Kaspersky products in the United States through a press release and a statement issued by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
I’ve heard from a representative at Kaspersky that they plan to withdraw their business from the US market and cease sales of their products and services following the implementation of the ban.
The spokesperson shared with BBC that as of July 20, 2024, Kaspersky will begin to scale back its activities in the US and eventually eliminate jobs based there.
Initially, upon hearing about the ban, Kaspersky Lab indicated its intention to contest it and explore ways to override or reverse the decision. However, recent developments suggest that this will not transpire. The cut-off date for sales and services is July 20, leaving users with a limited window to find alternative antivirus solutions.
