Karoshi: The Boys’ Giancarlo Esposito Cast in Lionsgate’s New Action Thriller

Actor Giancarlo Esposito, famously known for his roles as Stan Edgar in The Boys on Prime Video and Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul, has now been added to the cast of Lionsgate’s action-packed thriller film titled Karoshi. Esposito gained widespread recognition from these notable performances, and more recently, he appeared as Seth Voelker / Sidewinder in Captain America: Brave New World.

Joining Teo Yoo, Cynthia Erivo, Isabel May, and Takehiro Hira in the cast is Esposito, for the film Karoshi. The production team at 87Eleven Entertainment, consisting of Chad Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz, will produce this feature as part of their agreement with Lionsgate Studios. As a fervent admirer, I can’t wait to unravel the intriguing storyline that’s been shrouded in secrecy for this upcoming film. From what I gather, it promises to be a gripping corporate drama with an exhilarating samurai twist. The talented director, Takashi Doscher, renowned for his work on Freida Pinto-led Only, will bring this project to life, having penned the script himself. Excitingly, production is slated to commence in June 2025.

Remarkably, “Karoshi” is a Japanese term which, in essence, refers to death caused by excessive work. However, it’s uncertain whether the exact interpretation of the film’s title in relation to its storyline holds any importance.

For his depiction of Gus Fring, Esposito has been honored with several awards. Throughout his career, he has also played significant roles such as Buggin’ Out in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, Moff Gideon in Disney+’s Star Wars series The Mandalorian, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. in the MGM+ series Godfather of Harlem, and Teddy Knight in MaXXXine.

Previously, German actor Teo Yoo portrayed Viktor Tsoi in the 2018 musical film Leto. More recently, Cynthia Erivo starred as Elphaba in Wicked (2024). Isabel May has been seen in Netflix’s Alexa & Katie and Paramount+’s 1883. Takehiro Hira has acted as Hiroshi Randa in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as Ishido Kazunari in FX on Hulu and FX’s Shōgun.
