Karla Sofía Gascón is encountering criticism due to the reappearance of past social media posts, which some find objectionable. These posts, initially published on X (previously known as Twitter), have ignited a storm of controversy after journalist Sarah Hagi brought them back into focus.

Here’s what surfaced and how Gascón responded.

Karla Sofía Gascón faces backlash over her old racist tweets

Karla Sofia Gascón, the actress who was nominated for an Oscar from Emilia Perez, is currently under scrutiny due to old social media posts dating back to 2020 and 2021. These posts include comments that have sparked controversy regarding Muslims, George Floyd, and the lack of diversity in Hollywood.

Sarah Hagi recently brought attention to some tweets written by Gascón, which he later deleted. On November 22, 2020, Gascón posted a message on Twitter saying, “It seems to me that there are more Muslims in Spain. Whenever I pick up my daughter from school, I notice more women with their heads covered and long skirts. Next year, instead of teaching English, we might need to teach Arabic.” (as reported by Variety)

In a post dated September 2, 2020, accompanying an image of a woman wearing a burka, Gascón stated: “Islam is wonderful, devoid of machismo. Women are revered, and when they are so respected, a small square opening is left for their eyes and mouths to be seen, but only if she adheres to the rules. However, it’s said that they dress this way for their own satisfaction. This viewpoint on humanity is SADLY REPREhensible.

In May 2020, District Attorney Gascón tweeted about George Floyd’s death: “Many may not have truly cared for George Floyd, a man with a history of drug addiction and accusations of fraud. However, his death has underscored the fact that there are still those who view black people as nothing more than rights-less primates and law enforcement officers as cold-blooded killers.

In addition to his criticism, Gascón remarked about the 2021 Oscars, saying he wasn’t sure if it was an Afro-Korean cultural event, a Black Lives Matter protest, or the 8M (a reference to March 8th, International Women’s Day). Furthermore, he found it distasteful and unattractive.

Following criticism, Gascón expressed an apology through Netflix, stating, “Being part of a marginalized group myself, I am acutely aware of this pain, and I sincerely apologize to those I’ve unintentionally hurt.” She further emphasized, “Throughout my life, I have devoted myself to striving for a better world. I firmly believe that goodness will ultimately prevail over adversity” (as reported by AP News).

Netflix and the Academy have not commented.
