Kanye West Name Change Explained

It’s been reported that Kanye West has altered his name for a second time. The renowned hip hop artist, who sparked controversy with his recent announcement of a 2025 release titled WW3, is said to be adopting this new moniker in his official business documents.

What is Kanye West’s new name?

2025 rolled around and, well, I decided to switch things up a bit and go by “Ye Ye” now. My trusted financial advisor, Hussain Lalani, made it official in some new papers he filed, as reported by US Weekly.

It seems that the person known as West has not disclosed any specifics about his name change in public. Yet, the creator of “Jesus is King” recently hinted on platform X (previously known as Twitter) that he will no longer use the account identified as Kanye West.

The creator of “Donda” has stated that he will stop using his current Twitter account, which bears the handle @kanyewest, as his name is also Ye. He plans to establish a new account under the same username and has not yet launched his X account on Twitter. However, his Instagram account is only identified by the username “Ye.

Back in 2018, Kanye West adopted a new stage name for the first time. He unveiled this fresh identity as “Ye.” Additionally, this nickname served as the title for his eighth studio album, which was also dropped in the same year and won him a Grammy.

Explaining the motivation behind his name change, West stated that he desired a moniker reflecting his persona. He mentioned, “I believe ‘Ye’ is the most frequently used word in the Bible, and in the Bible it signifies ‘you.’ So I am you, we are one, it’s us (as reported by Billboard).

The transition moved from “Kanye,” symbolizing the one and only, to simply “Ye” – a representation of all that’s good, bad, puzzled, and complex within us. Essentially, the album mirrors our collective selves.

In the same year, Kanye West also announced his new name on social media. On X, he posted, “The one formerly known as Kanye West. I am YE.” It wasn’t until three more years that he legally changed his name. In 2021, a judge from the Los Angeles County Court reportedly approved his petition to officially adopt the name change.

Moreover, Ye disclosed the reason for deactivating his Kanye West Instagram account in 2024. In a message with Justin Laboy, the rapper detailed his choice. “I’m closing my Kanye West Instagram account,” he stated. “My identity is Ye, not any brand or numbers that might compel me to adhere to their desired label for me” (as reported by Rap-Up).
