Kamala Harris: Did Netflix Donate to Her Campaign? Cancel Controversy Explained

As a devoted Netflix subscriber and ardent follower of American politics, I was taken aback when I heard that Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, donated a substantial sum of money to Vice President Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign. This revelation has sparked a wave of controversy and calls for mass cancellation of the streaming service on social media platforms.

There have been rumors spreading that Reed Hastings, a co-founder of Netflix, has contributed financially to Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign for the 2024 U.S. Democratic presidential nomination. Some people are urging others to cancel their Netflix subscriptions in response.

Here is everything we have learned about whether Hastings donated money to Kamala Harris.

Did Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings donate money to Kamala Harris?

Reed Hastins, a co-founder and the executive chairman of Netflix, gave $7 million to a political action committee that is advocating for Kamala Harris’s campaign.

To The Information, a technology-centric site, Hastings admitted making a significant contribution and expressed, “We’re back in the race after that disheartening debate.” As reported by the publication, Hoffman, another billionaire, suggested the donation to Hastings. This marked the largest single candidate donation for him.

At first, Joe Biden was the Democratic candidate running against Donald Trump from the Republican Party. But following harsh criticism for his debate showing on June 27, 2024 (mentioned in Hastings’ interview with The Information), Biden withdrew from the upcoming election and endorsed Harris instead. Soon after, Harris earned sufficient backing from Democratic delegates to emerge as the presumptive nominee.

Why are people canceling Netflix?

When it was revealed that Hastings had made a charitable contribution, some individuals expressed their displeasure on social media by vowing to quit Netflix and encouraging others to follow suit.

A user on X, previously known as Twitter, with the handle @honey\_bee48 expressed, “I’m serious, I’m cancelling Netflix for good this time. There are plenty of free alternatives where I can find similar content. The co-founder gave over 7 million dollars to Kamala Harris’ campaign – I’ve had enough!”

In simpler terms, I’m seriously considering cancelling Netflix again. With so many free alternatives offering similar content, I think I’ll be able to save my money there. And to add fuel to my decision, one of the co-founders donated over $7 million to Kamala Harris’ campaign – not exactly endearing them to me!

User @ShannonLancer, in addition, advocated for a large-scale canceling of Netflix subscriptions. She alleged that the company had made donations to Harris’s campaign.

However, the comments beneath Hastings’ post suggest that he donated the money on a personal level. According to Variety, Netflix refused to provide a comment when contacted about the matter.

Hastings is a recent supporter who has joined the ranks of many influential Democrats backing Harris’ presidential campaign. Not too long ago, on X, he expressed his congratulations to Vice President Harris, stating, “Congratulations to Kamala Harris – it’s time for us to secure the victory.”
