This week, ex-employees of Justin Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer Studios, shared their experiences with the Los Angeles Times, highlighting concerns about Baldoni’s approach to “forced optimism” and the work environment he fostered.
What did Justin Baldoni’s former employees say about him?
In the report, ex-employees shared their experiences working alongside Baldoni when he was at Wayfarer. One former staff member described the atmosphere as consistently upbeat, though they noted that it could sometimes veer towards being excessively so, potentially creating a somewhat unhealthy work environment.
As a previous employee of Wayfarer, I’d express it like this: “It was an endless stream of positivity that sometimes felt overpowering – more like excessive positivity to me. I tend to be wary when individuals boast about being disruptors or ‘good people.’ It seemed insincere.
The report delves into Baldoni’s transformation and commitment towards supporting feminism, a journey said to have started in full swing following the birth of his daughter in 2015. However, it’s mentioned that many people saw these changes as “performance-oriented,” suggesting they were primarily aimed at enhancing his public image rather than genuine self-improvement.
According to a representative from Wayfarer and Baldoni, no concerns about workplace culture matters had ever been brought to their attention.
The message stated: “No issues or complaints about the company culture have been reported, nor have any problems with the platforms of its founders been communicated.” If employees were given advice on how to write their communications, it was always to maintain a professional tone and uphold the company’s values. Wayfarer emphasizes that happiness and positivity are at the core of good work, and they fully support this belief.
Baldoni’s religious views also seen as a driving force for the company
The report further notes that Baldoni’s devotion to the Baháʼí faith, a belief system established in the 19th century emphasizing the value of all religions and the unity of all people, was sometimes met with disapproval. Moreover, the tenets of this religion served as a significant motivator behind their actions.
According to a previous employee, the values of Baháʼí faith significantly influenced their actions. This topic was frequently discussed, especially by Steve Sarowitz, who was both a co-founder of Wayferer Studios and founder of Paylocity, as he joined the Baháʼí faith and found himself drawn to continually discuss these values due to his new membership.
Regarding the report, a representative from Baldoni and Wayferer confirmed that the company upholds its core values, yet they actively encourage staff members to express and celebrate their personal beliefs in their preferred manner.
As a gamer immersed in Wayfarer’s vibrant world, it’s clear that our projects draw deeply from diverse spiritualities and backgrounds. I personally find that expressing myself spiritually is quite natural here, and it’s something the team wholeheartedly embraces. Our leaders actively encourage us to honor our unique beliefs, creating a work environment where everyone feels free to practice their faith in their own way.
