Just In: Malayalam filmmaker Aashiq Abu resigns from FEFKA; Is it because of leadership’s ‘insincere’ stance on Hema Committee Report?

As an ardent supporter and admirer of Aashiq Abu’s work, I find myself deeply moved by his recent decision to step down from his role at FEFKA. His unwavering commitment to justice and integrity is truly inspiring. His life experiences within the organization have been far from smooth sailing, with instances of financial hardships and questionable practices that he endured in silence for years.

Aashiq Abu, a filmmaker from Malayalam, has chosen to leave his position at the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) due to disagreements over the Hema Commission report controversy. His decision stems from his strong opposition to FEFKA’s statement regarding the Hema Committee report. He criticized FEFKA for their hypocrisy, particularly targeting B Unnikrishnan, the General Secretary of FEFKA, for his stance on the issue.

In his resignation note, Aashiq Abu pointed out the financial challenges he encountered at FEFKA starting from 2012. According to Onmanorama, the filmmaker expressed that although he joined FEFKA’s executive committee in 2009, they did not provide assistance when he faced money troubles with a producer, despite his efforts. Worse yet, they later requested a 20% commission on half of the funds they helped him secure at a later time.

In addition, he disclosed having a strong disagreement with director Sibi Malayil concerning the matter and wrote, “Due to his insistence, I eventually handed over a check for Rs 10 lakh to him. It seems he returned the check out of concern that I might cause trouble. Later on, I found out that two scriptwriters were also compelled to give 20% of their commission to FEFKA, which they had to do due to their involvement.”

Prior to handing in his resignation at FEFKA, Aashiq Abu expressed disapproval towards B Unnikrishnan’s stance regarding the Hema Committee report debate. Aashiq pointed out that Unnikrishnan had previously advocated for a ban on film artists, which seems inconsistent with his current views on the Hema Committee report conclusions. Moreover, he stated that FEFKA released their statement on the dispute without first discussing it or consulting with other members of the organization.

For those not familiar, FEFKA recently called for disclosure of the identities of everyone implicated in the Hema Committee report. They believe it’s crucial to reveal these names given the seriousness of the case.
