Just Friends is one of the most underrated Christmas movies

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless winter evenings curled up with a mug of hot cocoa and a stack of classic Christmas movies, I must confess that my collection is not complete without the underrated gem, “Just Friends.” This movie, released two decades ago, remains overlooked by many, which is nothing short of a tragedy.

It turns out that not every favorite holiday film includes “Just Friends”.

Even though “Just Friends” hit the screens nearly two decades back, I’m always surprised by how little people talk about its brilliance. Yes, it has certain aspects that might be questionable today, but let’s not forget the incredible ensemble cast and a compelling narrative that this movie offers. These elements often get overshadowed in discussions about the film.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, allow me to introduce the main cast which includes Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart, Anna Faris, Chris Klein, and Julie Hagerty, along with others. But if that doesn’t quite pique your interest, perhaps the engaging plotline will persuade you to give it a watch.

The narrative centers around Chris (portrayed by Ryan Reynolds), who finds himself friend-zoned by his childhood companion, Jamie (Amy Smart), during their high school days. Initially with no intention of revisiting his hometown, Chris unexpectedly gets stranded there on a business trip intended to finalize a deal with Samantha James (Anna Faris). Intrigued to exhibit his recent transformation and offer Jamie a glimpse of what she missed out on over the years, Chris remains in their shared hometown.

Just Friends is a beloved yet forgotten Christmas movie.

As a fan, I can’t help but notice that the movie “Just Friends” doesn’t get as much love as some other holiday films. The reason for this, in my opinion, is quite apparent: Ryan Reynolds wore a fat suit to play a younger Chris. At the time, it may have seemed acceptable, but looking back, it feels out of place. In today’s movie landscape, such a choice would be uncommon, especially in our favorite modern Christmas movies. This could be one reason why “Just Friends” isn’t always on everyone’s must-watch list during the holiday season.

If you can overlook that aspect, you’ll be astonished by how fantastic this film turns out to be. Though Ryan Reynolds is famous for portraying Deadpool, his character in this movie is both endearing yet slightly arrogant. When you understand why he behaves the way he does, everything falls into place. Moreover, it’s delightful to witness his transformation from a sweet character to a player, eventually striking the perfect balance between his past self and his current persona.

Among the excellent ensemble, Anna Faris stood out by fully immersing herself in her role as Samantha James. She portrayed an unhinged character with abandon, from penning a song about forgiveness to passionately kissing Chris upon reunion, making her a character that’s impossible not to chuckle at. This consistent comedic approach permeates the entire movie, resulting in a hilarious viewing experience right up until the final scene and creating comedy gold.

Fundamentally, “Just Friends” is a heartwarming tale about two friends rekindling their romantic relationship. If you’re a fan of romance novels, I believe you’ll be deeply captivated by this Christmas movie. Even if romance isn’t your usual cup of tea, the acting in this film is truly remarkable. Whether you’re keen on exploring Ryan Reynolds’ body of work or seeking an underappreciated holiday gem, “Just Friends” is definitely worth a watch.

Just Friends is currently streaming on Hulu.
