Jurassic World Dominion Dethrones Star Wars as Most Expensive Movie

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the title of the most costly movie ever produced is no longer in the hands of a Star Wars film, according to recent financial reports from Universal. The 2022 blockbuster, Jurassic World Dominion, has officially seized the throne!

What was Jurassic World Dominion’s budget?

Based on recently disclosed financial records from Universal, it appears that Jurassic World Dominion was produced with an astonishing budget of approximately $583.9 million (or about £453.6 million). In pounds sterling, this figure is only slightly higher than the reported budget for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, which stood at around £452 million.

A significant portion of the movie’s expensive budget was due to its production happening in 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since lockdowns were enforced worldwide, numerous staff and crew working on the film had to isolate in the UK, which led to extended stays as they couldn’t return home immediately, thus increasing costs.

The news follows an announcement by The Guardian that Universal will shoot their upcoming movie in Britain. Due to tax incentives offered by the government, Universal received approximately £89.1 million to film the 2022 blockbuster there, marking one of the largest payments for a film since the program started.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In the UK, game developers can get back up to 25.5% of what they spend on their game, provided that at least 10% of the overall production cost is invested within the country itself.

Although the specific figures for the upcoming Jurassic World installment, Jurassic World: Rebirth, haven’t been disclosed yet, it’s anticipated that Universal will follow a similar pattern as in the past. Filming for Rebirth took place at Sky Studios Elstree in London, with additional locations such as Thailand, Kalkara, and New York City also being used.
