Born on March 3, 1970, Julie Bowen was initially known as Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer in Baltimore, Maryland. She grew up in Ruxton-Riderwood, Maryland, sharing her early years with her mother Suzanne, father John (a real estate developer), older sister Molly, and younger sister Annie.
Julie attended Calvert School, Garrison Forest School, Roland Park Country School, and a school in Rhode Island named St. George’s School.
Upon finishing her high school education, she attended Brown University and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Renaissance studies in the year 1991.
During her time in college, Julie Bowen participated in various theater productions such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Lemon Sky,” and “Stage Door.” Additionally, she spent a year of her studies in Florence, Italy during her junior year.
During her time at college, Julie managed to secure the main part in the indie movie “Five Spot Jewel,” which debuted in 1992. Upon receiving her degree, she decided to relocate to New York City where she continued her acting education at the renowned Actors Studio.

In 1992, Bowen made a guest appearance on the ABC daytime soap opera “Loving.” She also featured in the TV shows “Lifestories: Families in Crisis” (1993), “Class of ’96,” and “Acapulco H.E.A.T.” (1993).
Additionally, she starred in television films titled “Runaway Daughters” (1994) and “Where Are My Children?” (1994). In the year 1996, she appeared as Virginia Venit in the Adam Sandler film “Happy Gilmore,” and collaborated with Michael Keaton in “Multiplicity.
In 1998, she began playing a recurring character named Roxanne on the NBC medical drama “ER” for nine consecutive episodes.
Back in the year 2000, I stepped into the world of TV stardom, guest-starring on “Dawson’s Creek” and bringing the character Carol Vessey, an English teacher, to life in NBC’s “Ed.” Over four seasons, we aired a whopping 83 episodes, and in 2001, our unique blend of humor took home the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Television New Comedy Series. It was quite the ride!
In 2001, Julie Bowen acted alongside Tim Allen in the film titled “Joe Somebody.” Subsequently, starting from 2005, she took on the character of attorney Denise Bauer in the series “Boston Legal,” featuring in a total of 50 episodes. This show also starred William Shatner, James Spader, and Candice Bergen.

For eleven seasons, she played Claire Dunphy in the popular ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” which was recognized as one of the top 60 series of all time by “TV Guide” magazine in 2013 (#43), and also ranked #34 on the Writers Guild of America’s list of the 101 best-written TV series ever.
During her tenure on “Modern Family”, Julie appeared in multiple films, such as “Crazy on the Outside” (2010), “Jumping the Broom” (2011), “Conception” (2012), and “Life of the Party” (2018). In 2011, she also starred as Rhonda Harken in “Horrible Bosses”, a role that contributed to the film’s massive box office success of $209.6 million.
In 2020, she collaborated once more with Adam Sandler for the Netflix movie “Hubie Halloween” and won half a million dollars for the charity Baby2Baby by participating in “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.” Additionally, she reprised her role as Virginia in “Happy Gilmore 2,” which was released in 2025.
Personal Life
On the 9th of September, 2004, Julie Bowen got married to Scott Phillips, who is both a real estate magnate and a software engineer. Their first-born child, Oliver, arrived on the 10th of April, 2007. Then, they welcomed twins John and Gustav into their family on May 8, 2009.
Unfortunately, Julie and Scott ended their marriage in September 2018, with Phillips keeping the $5.4 million house in Studio City following the divorce agreement.
