Actress Julianne Moore voiced her dismay after discovering that Freckleface Strawberry, a cherished children’s book of hers, was prohibited from schools managed by the Department of Defense during the Trump administration. Expressing her dissatisfaction with the decision, she also inquired about the justification for such a ban.
Here is more about why Julianne Moore is criticizing Donald Trump.
Why is Julianne Moore calling out Donald Trump?
Julianne Moore has voiced her dismay and surprise upon discovering that her children’s book, Freckleface Strawberry, was prohibited from Department of Defense (DoD) schools during the Trump administration. Similarly, books like No Truth Without Ruth, focusing on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Becoming Nicole, exploring gender identity, were also banned. This decision was made after a review by the DoD, with the initial report coming from the nonprofit organization PEN America. They highlighted the apparent inconsistency in the Trump administration’s stance on book censorship, as they had previously denounced it as a “hoax.
Moore publicly voiced her surprise on social media platforms, using the term “galling” to describe the ban. Being raised in a military family and having attended a DoD school herself, she found it particularly upsetting. She underscored that Freckleface Strawberry is merely a tale of a young girl learning self-acceptance, not something she expected to be labeled as contentious. In her Instagram post, she further explained that this book was written for her own children and other kids, to remind them that despite our individual struggles, we share the common bonds of humanity and community.

According to The Guardian, the Department of Defense hasn’t given a reason for focusing on Moore’s book. However, a memo surfaced showing policy adjustments during the Trump administration. These changes included using “sex” instead of “gender,” banning personal pronouns in email signatures, and advising schools to avoid celebrating cultural events like Black History Month.
