Julian LeFay, ‘Father of The Elder Scrolls,’ Steps Back From Game Development Due To Cancer

Julian LeFay, the previous head engineer at Bethesda and a co-creator of OnceLost Games, has decided to take a break from game creation, as the company revealed on the day before yesterday, due to his persistent struggle with cancer.

In a video shared by OnceLost Games, producer Victor Villareal disclosed some news. “Our technical producer, Julian LeFay – a figure who I’m confident requires no introduction – has been waging a tough fight against cancer for quite some time,” said Villareal. “He’s displayed immense courage and resilience, but it appears he doesn’t have much time left. He’s chosen to step away from the project so he can spend his remaining days with his family and dear ones.

Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and Battlespire. One of the gods in The Elder Scrolls universe, Julianos, the God of Wisdom and Reason, is named after Peterson.

Through the years, LeFay has been involved in numerous projects. In 2019, they teamed up with ex-colleagues from Bethesda, Ted Peterson and Vijay Lakshman, to establish OnceLost Games. Their aim was to develop The Wayward Realms, a game that pays tribute to the spirit of Daggerfall.

In the description of the announcement video from OnceLost Games, Peterson shared a narrative detailing his past with LeFay.

Instead of dwelling on tales of our bond and our recent collaborations as creative and technical directors on Wayward Realms, I must address the crux of my message. Regrettably, Julian has been valiantly fighting cancer. His medical team has shared that his days with us may be numbered, and we are emotionally preparing ourselves to bid farewell to an undeniable legend in our industry.

As a passionate gamer, I was honored when Peterson extended an invitation for us to openly express our thoughts, feelings, heartfelt prayers, cherished memories, or the profound influence that LeFay’s incredible work had on each one of us.

they will strive not to tarnish his legacy.

To wrap things up, let me share a quote from our eloquent team member Julian LeFay. He made this statement at our last meeting, and I think it captures his essence perfectly. ‘Every task is personal, and if it isn’t, then you’re merely doing a job for payment, and you’ll never find the drive to achieve something truly meaningful.’
