Last week, we shared news about speculations that Amazon’s Prime Video might be planning a new Judge Dredd series, with the executive producers from “The Boys” and Karl Urban returning to his role. However, Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, clarified these rumors on Facebook, saying, “I was taken aback by the latest gossip about a Judge Dredd series on Amazon, produced by ‘The Boys’ team and starring the talented Karl Urban. It would indeed be fantastic, but I believe we would have had to finalize a contract and participate in the creative process. In other words, it’s not accurate.
Discussions about a brand new Judge Dredd television program have been ongoing for quite some time. Back in 2017, IM Global and Rebellion, the company responsible for Judge Dredd comic books, revealed intentions to create Judge Dredd: Mega City One. This series aimed to portray a group of Judges – futuristic peacekeepers granted the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner – as they confronted the intricate problems of the 22nd century. Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, explained their concept for the show, saying, “We aim to convey the essence of Dredd, we want to include the eccentric styles and the kneepads. We’re not targeting humor, but there will be instances of both lightness and darkness, similar to the comics.
Our Review: Why ‘Dredd’ is One of the Decade’s Great Films
By July 2020, Kingsley revealed in an interview that the initial stages of development were already in progress for Mega-City One series, and a script had been drafted. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted production, causing issues with funding and scheduling across the industry. In his words, “We’ve made significant progress on numerous scripts for Mega-City One, but due to the pandemic, we can’t start filming just yet. We have the scripts ready, but the pandemic has caused changes in everyone’s funding and timelines.” Additionally, he showed interest in involving actors from past Judge Dredd films, such as Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, or even Sylvester Stallone.
In August 2020, Karl Urban, who portrayed Judge Dredd in the 2012 movie, expressed interest in reprising his role. During an interview promoting the second season of “The Boys”, Urban stated, “I’ve previously expressed my desire to return and contribute to that world, sharing more Judge Dredd tales. The Judge Dredd universe is rich with numerous excellent stories.” He also mentioned his trust in Kingsley and his team to uphold the character’s legacy and would be ready to return if offered the chance.
It seems that Kingsly hasn’t agreed to any series deals yet, suggesting he might be the one delaying things by demanding his specific vision for the character. With luck, this unverified news isn’t accurate; some Dredd enthusiasts might be relieved if it turns out to be a false alarm, given how The Boys has shifted towards more biased storylines in recent seasons, possibly due to Seth Rogen’s political bias.
Although both the creative team and Karl Urban express a strong desire for more Judge Dredd stories on TV, no definitive plans have been made with Prime Video, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, or Urban. At present, there’s no possibility of a film sequel. Any rumors suggesting otherwise have been debunked by the rights holders. For now, the future of Judge Dredd on screen is still up in the air, but it’s exciting that the franchise remains popular among fans and industry professionals alike.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, I strongly recommend you give it a try. You won’t be disappointed – it’s truly one of the outstanding movies from that particular decade.
