As a fan who has been following the Batman universe for decades, I must say, the news about a potential Joker TV show is nothing short of exhilarating! With Matt Reeves at the helm and Barry Keoghan stepping into the iconic role of the Joker, it feels like we’re on the verge of something truly special.
It’s being said that a television series based on the character of “The Joker,” is allegedly under production by Matt Reeves. There are whispers suggesting this TV show could pave the way for a possible third installment in the Batman film franchise, much like how HBO’s “The Penguin” series is structured.
What do we know about a potential Joker TV show?
Initially, word about the show came through Marvelvision podcasts. Previously skeptical critic Devin Faraci mentioned that Warner Bros. Discovery has plans for the Joker character from The Batman, possibly a standalone Joker series on TV or even a Joker-focused spin-off. If developed, this could pave the way for The Batman 3.
In a subsequent article, Jeff Sneider from The Insider echoed the circulating rumors. His report stated that Matt Reeves indeed has significant plans for Barry Keoghan’s Joker character, hinted at in the closing scenes of The Batman. As per Devin Faraci’s Marvelvision podcast, Keoghan is slated to star in a standalone TV series. This series will reportedly bridge the gap between The Batman Part II and The Batman Part III, with Keoghan set to portray the main antagonist during this period.
In his words, the upcoming series functions much like the continuous Penguin storyline does, acting as a link connecting the sequels of Batman, just as The Penguin series ties together Batman and Batman: Part II.
In The Batman movie, Barry Keoghan made a very short appearance as an unidentified prisoner at Arkham Asylum. However, in a cut scene featuring him and Batman, it was disclosed that his character was actually the Joker.
Matt Reeves has previously shared his aspirations for expanding the world of The Batman. Back in September, he expressed interest in crafting an expansive “crime saga” encompassing numerous characters to Entertainment Weekly. More recently, he mentioned to Andy Serkis that he envisions himself continuing to develop series centered around particular characters.
Over the last few years, Reeves’ vision for an expansive Batman universe has undergone significant shifts. For instance, a Max series focusing on the Gotham City Police Department was proposed in 2020, with connections to The Batman. Regrettably, this project didn’t materialize. Additionally, there were whispers of another series centered around Arkham Asylum, but it never moved beyond speculation.
