Joker: Folie à Deux First Reviews: Critics Are Mixed on Todd Phillips’ DC Sequel

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of sequels that either lived up to the hype or left us wanting more. The anticipation for Joker: Folie à Deux has been palpable since its announcement, and as someone who was deeply moved by the original, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of excitement mixed with a dash of trepidation.

The first reviews for Joker: Folie à Deux are in.

In U.S. cinemas this upcoming August, the anticipated follow-up to the 2019’s “Joker” – titled “Folie à Deux,” which was helmed by Todd Phillips – will be unveiled, following its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival

As a fervent cinema enthusiast, I’ve just learned that the review restrictions for “Joker: Folie à Deux” have been lifted, allowing critics to share their thoughts. The response seems to be a blend of opinions about this film featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in leading roles

What are critics saying about Joker: Folie à Deux?

According to IndieWire’s David Ehrlich, the film “Joker: Folie à Deux” received a C- rating. In his review on X, Ehrlich stated that the movie seems intentionally bad and acts as a provocative troll, intended to annoy fans while boring everyone else. Furthermore, he finds it more disappointing than any of Joker’s actions because it wasted Lady Gaga’s talent

David Rooney from TheHollywoodReporter noted that the movie was “somewhat lacking in depth narratively at times, even becoming somewhat dull.” Additionally, he commented that the filmmakers, Phillips and Scott Silver, had a strong base to build on with references to Martin Scorsese’s films Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy for their original Joker. However, this time around, the story seems to be more of an idea or concept rather than a solid foundation

In contrast to this, Empire Magazine’s Josh Nugent also provided a favorable evaluation. He stated, “In an overcrowded movie landscape filled with superheroes, villains, and multiple Jokers, Phillips, Phoenix, and now Gaga have skillfully crafted an original storyline. Despite its apparent borrowing from various sources, it stands out uniquely.”

According to TheWrap’s William Bibbiani, the film stands out as “a bit bold, a bit thought-provoking, and a bit sincere.”

Bibbiani, who is also a co-host of the Critically Acclaimed podcast, further wrote in his review, “What’s most impressive about Joker: Folie à Deux is the way Phillips willingly undercuts his own billion-dollar blockbuster. He’s looking inward. Arthur is looking inward. Hopefully the audience will too, and question why they care so much about Arthur Fleck in the first place. Do we really love Arthur or do we just love how his story, itself a glorified TV melodrama about a sad person committing sad crimes for the sake of a sad rubbernecking audience, makes us feel about ourselves?”

According to Deadline’s Pete Hammond, Phoenix delves deeply into his character and performs a daring act by tap dancing, singing, and embodying the role in an extraordinary way that surpasses his Oscar-winning performance in “Joker”, even if it takes the character in a fresh, unexpected direction. On the other hand, Gaga presents a subdued portrayal, differing from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and instead showcasing her own unique interpretation of the role. She convincingly displays affection and connection with the Joker, and more importantly, the man beneath the makeup

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite studio, Warner Bros., is set to unleash “Folie à Deux” in U.S. cinemas on October 4, 2024! Can’t wait to immerse myself in the big screen experience!
