Joker 2: Is Batman or Bruce Wayne in Folie à Deux?

As a fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate tapestry of the DC Universe, I eagerly anticipated the release of Joker: Folie à Deux. Having followed the saga of Batman and his arch-nemesis since their inception, I was intrigued by the potential connections between Arthur Fleck and Bruce Wayne in the first film. However, the revelation that they were not blood-related was a bit of a letdown for me, though it did add an interesting layer to the narrative.

The 2019 movie “Joker” takes place prior to Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman, but it weaves fascinating links between him and Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix). Arthur’s mother, Penny, claims that he is the son she had with Thomas Wayne, making him Bruce Wayne’s older stepbrother. However, this claim is eventually proven untrue. Penny adopted Arthur while working as a housekeeper at Wayne Manor, and her relationship with Thomas was only imagined. In a startling turn of events, one of Arthur’s followers ends up murdering Thomas and Martha Wayne in front of Bruce, thereby linking the Joker to the origin story of Batman. With “Joker: Folie à Deux” on the horizon, fans are curious if we will see Bruce Wayne/Batman in the sequel.

Here’s everything you need to know if Batman is there is Joker 2.

Does Batman or Bruce Wayne appear in Joker 2 Folie à Deux?

In the upcoming film “Joker: Folie à Deux”, Batman/Bruce Wayne will not make an appearance. Despite the fact that the Wayne family played a crucial role in the initial movie’s storyline, they are not featured in the sequel’s plot.

In this movie, the spotlight is shifted towards some intriguing characters I found myself captivated by – Lady Gaga’s Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, Brendan Gleeson’s Jackie Sullivan, and Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent. The way they perceive Arthur and engage with him is particularly fascinating. Interestingly enough, Dante Pereira-Olson takes on the role of Bruce Wayne in Joker.

In “Folie à Deux,” it’s said that the story unfolds in 1983, two years following the events of “Joker.” At the start of the film, Arthur is confined at Arkham Asylum. He eventually stands trial for the murders he’s accused of. It’s important to note that during this time, Bruce Wayne (future Batman) is quite young. Alfred Pennyworth is presumably doing his best to guide Bruce in the absence of his parents, and also keeping him shielded from the media uproar surrounding Arthur’s trial.

In the film “Joker: Folie à Deux,” having Bruce (Batman) appear wouldn’t have furthered the story since his role in Batman’s creation is already well-established. Moreover, Todd Phillips, who directed both Joker films, stated in a July 2024 interview with Empire magazine that Arthur would not transform into the Joker (the Clown Prince of Crime).

Phillips clarified, “We wouldn’t consider doing such a thing because Arthur doesn’t possess the traits of a criminal mastermind; he’s never exhibited those qualities.

In the movie “Folie à Deux,” Arthur meets his end and a new Joker appears who could potentially become Batman’s most formidable adversary. This tale, if someone chooses to narrate it, involves Batman/Bruce Wayne, but this particular story does not.
