As a die-hard fan of the DC universe who has been eagerly awaiting the release of Joker 2, I must admit that I was initially thrilled at the prospect of a standalone film featuring Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. However, upon learning that director Todd Phillips has dismissed this idea, my enthusiasm has taken a slight dip.
With the upcoming release of “Joker 2”, director Todd Phillips has shared some details about the future of Lady Gaga’s character, Harley Quinn. At a recent red carpet event, Phillips mentioned the idea of a solo movie featuring Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel. However, he also clarified that her character will primarily stay within the two Joker films, with no immediate plans for additional spin-offs or expansions at this time.
Joker 2 director Todd Phillips touches on Harley Quinn spin-off idea
According to Todd Phillips, the director of “Joker: Folie à Deux” or “Joker 2”, he has ruled out the creation of a solo movie featuring Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn.
At the premiere of the movie, when asked about a possible spinoff focusing on Gaga’s character “Lee,” Phillips stated, “In my opinion, these two films have their own identity. And for now, I don’t plan to extend Lee’s story.” This implies that Phillips sees the Joker sequel as a standalone tale, and there are no immediate plans to develop further narratives based on it.
During a 2024 interview with Variety, Phillips discussed his approach to Lady Gaga’s characterization of Harley Quinn within the unique setting of Joker’s universe. He intentionally toned down the over-the-top qualities that were present in earlier portrayals.
Phillips explained, “We deliberately removed elements like a high-pitched voice, distinctive accent, chewing gum, and all the ‘sassy’ traits typically found in comic book versions, as we wanted her character to blend seamlessly into our version of Gotham from the first movie.
2024’s psychological thriller titled “Folie à Deux,” a sequel to “Joker” (2019), delves into the story of Arthur Fleck who develops a bond with fellow inmate Lee Quinzel at Arkham State Hospital. The film showcases their journey into insanity, as Arthur’s supporters initiate a movement aiming to free him. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, and Lady Gaga portrays Lee Quinzel in the lead roles. Supporting cast members include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz.
The film is scheduled to release on October 4, 2024, in the U.S.
