Johnny Depp, who was previously part of the “Fantastic Beasts” cast, has recently shared his thoughts on leaving the Harry Potter spin-off series around five years since the occurrence took place.
Johnny Depp initially joined the Fantastic Beasts series through the first film, titled “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” released in 2016. In a surprising plot twist, it was unveiled at the end of that movie that Colin Farrell’s character Percival Graves was actually a disguised Gellert Grindelwald (played by Depp) all along.
Johnny Depp played the notorious dark wizard once more in the 2018 sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald. Initially, he was scheduled to continue his role in 2023’s The Secrets of Dumbledore. However, Warner Bros requested his departure from the franchise in November 2020, a decision resulting from unfavorable media attention surrounding a libel lawsuit Depp filed against News Group Newspapers Ltd over domestic abuse accusations leveled by ex-wife Amber Heard.
What did Johnny Depp say about his Fantastic Beasts dismissal?
Five years on, Depp has looked back on being asked to step down from the role of Grindelwald during an interview with The Telegraph. ” frankly, there’s been a lot of talk about me out there, and I don’t let it bother me because I’m not running for political office,” he said, reflecting on the incident. “It happened so suddenly, like a blink of an eye. They asked me to resign, but what I was thinking was that they wanted me to retire from acting altogether.
When inquired about his immediate reaction to the demand, Depp responded bluntly, “You’re mistaken if you believe you can inflict more pain on me than I’ve already experienced. There are simply too many of me for you to eliminate.
About three weeks after Depp’s departure from The Secrets of Dumbledore was announced, Mads Mikkelsen stepped into the role of Grindelwald. It turned out to be a fortunate decision for Depp, as he avoided being part of the third Fantastic Beasts movie, which garnered mostly unfavorable reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office, earning only about $400 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing film in the Wizarding World series.
After the release of “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” Warner Bros. decided to start over with the franchise on television screens, currently developing a fresh take on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series for HBO.
The Fantastic Beasts trilogy is currently streaming on Max.
