Donnie Yen, famously known for playing Ip Man, has recently spoken about Lionsgate’s upcoming movie spin-off of John Wick featuring the character Caine, following almost a year since the project was first officially unveiled. In this new venture, Donnie Yen will be revisiting his beloved character Caine from John Wick: Chapter 4, who is an assassin that lost his sight, and who has been recruited by the High Table to eliminate his old friend, John Wick, for the protection of his daughter.
Beyond heading the acting ensemble, Yen has also agreed to serve as the film’s director and executive producer. This will be his debut directing an English-language feature. The yet-unnamed Caine spin-off, penned by Mattson Tomlin from a previous draft by Robert Askins, is set to be directed by Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, in collaboration with franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road. Production is slated to commence later this year.
What did Donnie Yen say about his John Wick Caine spin-off movie?
At this year’s CinemaCon, Yen has shared his enthusiasm about rejoining the John Wick production team for a standalone movie within the blockbuster series. His character was last depicted in the 2023 film as he returned to Paris to be with his daughter, following the High Table granting him his freedom. Meanwhile, a beloved character from the franchise, portrayed by Rina Sawayama as Akira, has resurfaced with a vendetta against Caine for the murder of her father. As of now, it’s uncertain whether Akira’s storyline will intersect with the upcoming spin-off’s plot.
According to Yen, the John Wick movies have established a remarkably lofty benchmark in action movie production, and he’s grateful for being allowed by Lionsgate to raise the bar even higher on this franchise. He’s excited and feeling motivated to make this project a reality.
Iwanyk and Lee stated: “There isn’t anyone more familiar with this character than Donnie, and he has a knack for giving audiences precisely what they desire and anticipate from Hong Kong-style action. He undeniably is the optimal choice to direct, and we are eager to start filming.
Furthermore, Stahelski has hinted at his plans for the John Wick spin-off. He revealed that the film is being crafted as a contemporary martial arts masterpiece reminiscent of classic kung-fu films. It will showcase distinctive action scenes akin to the combat styles displayed in Yen’s prior productions.
One character from the John Wick universe I particularly love is Caine. The thought of delving into his story and uncovering all his escapades fills us with anticipation, according to Stahelski. He envisions a contemporary martial arts masterpiece that expands on the John Wick world, and who else could lead this endeavor than Donnie Yen? His grasp of the culture, the setting, and undeniably, the action, make him an ideal director for this task.
