John Wick 5 Gets Update, Keanu Reeves’ Caine Spin-off Status Revealed

Recently, filmmaker Chad Stahelski, long-time director of the John Wick series, shared updates on the development of John Wick 5, the upcoming Keanu Reeves-centric spin-off, and his role in these projects.

What’s the latest John Wick 5 update?

To The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski acknowledged the challenge of developing John Wick 5 while maintaining the authenticity of Wick’s death in the fourth film. He confessed that generating fresh concepts has been difficult, and they are currently working hard to find a solution.

Stahelski admitted, “Honestly, it’s a bit of a puzzle for us right now.” He and Mike Finch, the writer for both the fourth and fifth films, have a promising story idea that they think is exciting. Once they have a 50-page outline, if they feel it has potential, they will collaborate with Keanu Reeves to develop it further. Essentially, everyone seems eager for it, but the question is whether they can make it satisfying. They are currently working on it actively, but there’s still uncertainty about the final outcome.

Although there have been reports of a fifth film being developed, director Stahelski appears to be cautious about its creation. He mentioned that if they determine it’s not suitable, they might uncover other compelling storylines in the process. However, he acknowledged that the studio has a strong desire for a fifth movie and they are making efforts towards its production.

The studio seems eager to bring this project to life at some stage. In fact, they’ve been supportive, encouraged us to give it our best, and we’ve come up with some great ideas. We’ll definitely put those ideas into action.

Does John Wick appear in Caine?

Was there a possibility that Wick might feature in the upcoming film spin-off titled Caine, starring Donny Yen? Stahelski clarified that Wick won’t make an appearance in this movie, instead hinting at the tone fans should anticipate for the new production.

In contrast to the Donny Yen spinoff not featuring the John Wick character, it centers around Donny Yen and pays tribute to classic kung fu films. As Director Stahelski put it, if John Wick 1 was inspired by Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this is more akin to Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai. This should make it simpler for audiences to understand as it falls within a familiar sub-genre of martial arts films we adore.
