John Malkovich Is a Cult Leader in First Look Photo of A24’s Opus

A first glimpse at the A24 film Opus has been revealed, featuring acclaimed actor John Malkovich portraying a charismatic pop star cult leader. This chilling horror production is penned and helmed by Mark Anthony Green, with its release scheduled for March 14, 2025.

What is Opus about?

The story, Opus, centers on Ariel Ecton, a driven young author (portrayed by Ayo Edebiri from The Bear), who is on a quest for the ultimate tale. She receives an invitation to the secluded estate of Alfred Moretti (Malkovich), a legendary pop star who’s been absent from the public eye for three long decades. As she navigates this mysterious setting, Ariel discovers that Alfred’s grand comeback is shrouded in a chilling conspiracy, with journalists and devoted fans of the iconic pop star surrounding her.

A budding author receives an invitation to visit a secluded estate once belonging to a famed pop icon who vanished three decades ago. Amidst the idol’s devoted followers and inebriated reporters, she unwittingly becomes entangled in his enigmatic scheme.

2025 will see A24’s inaugural horror production, titled Opus. Besides Malkovich and Edebiri, this movie also features an impressive cast that includes Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), Young Mazino (Beef), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), and many others.

John Malkovich is widely recognized for his performances in films such as Death of a Salesman, Dangerous Liaisons, The Glass Menagerie, Of Mice and Men, In the Line of Fire, Con Air, Empire of the Sun, Ripley’s Game, Bird Box, and Being John Malkovich.

In addition to her impressive acting roles in The Sweet East, Bottoms, Theater Camp, How It Ends, As of Yet, and Cicada (to name a few), Edebiri has also contributed her voice talents to projects such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Inside Out 2.

Opus hits theaters on March 14.
