What happens in the Seneca trailer?

The movie trailer portrays the narrative of the philosopher Seneca in Rome during the year 65 AD. After acting as Emperor Nero’s teacher and trusted counselor, Nero deceives his confidant and attempts to accuse him of orchestrating an assassination plot against himself. Eventually, he orders Seneca’s execution. The movie is inspired by authentic historical records and original writings penned by Seneca himself.

On April 8, 2025, the movie Seneca will be available for digital streaming on HD internet, cable, and satellite services across North America, as well as on DVD.

The movie “Seneca” is helmed by director Robert Schwentke and collaboratively scripted with Matthew David Wilder. In addition to Malkovich, this film features the performances of Tom Xander, Geraldine Chaplin, Mary-Louise Parker, and the late Julian Sands.

65 AD, Rome: Philosopher Seneca has served as Emperor Nero’s mentor and confidant since their childhood, playing a key role in his rise to power. However, as time passes, Nero begins to tire of Seneca. Seizing an opportunity when an attempt on Seneca’s life is thwarted, Nero wrongly accuses Seneca of complicity in the failed assassination.

As Seneca hosts an extravagant gathering at his countryside estate, an unexpected death sentence from Emperor Nero arrives via messenger. The edict states that he must be deceased by dawn. This final night serves as his ultimate trial: Will he prove himself to be a manipulator, pretender, and sycophant?
