John Lithgow Confirms Dumbledore Casting, Talks HBO’s Harry Potter Show

John Lithgow, a Golden Globe winner known for “The Crown” and “Conclave,” has revealed his participation in HBO’s forthcoming Harry Potter series, making him the first officially announced cast member. This esteemed actor will assume the celebrated role of Albus Dumbledore, a character previously brought to life by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the highly successful film franchise.

The project spanning over a decade, known as the series, is planned to adapt one book from J.K. Rowling’s famous series each season. Currently, auditions for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley are ongoing in both the United Kingdom and Ireland. The selected young actors should be between 9 and 11 years old by April 2025, hinting at a possible start date for production.

In a recent conversation, Lithgow shared the tale of being chosen for the Harry Potter series, acknowledging that agreeing to be part of it wasn’t an effortless choice.

In an unexpected turn of events, Lithgow revealed that he received another film offer during the Sundance Film Festival, which posed a challenging choice since it would significantly impact his final career phase. The HBO series is being penned by Emmy-winning producer Francesca Gardiner (known for shows like Killing Eve and Succession). This series is overseen by Gardiner, Mark Mylod, J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and veteran Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. Notably, Mylod, who has previously collaborated with HBO on Game of Thrones and The Last of Us, will also direct several episodes. This production is a joint venture between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television.
