As a fan who has followed John Cena’s career from his WWE days to his big-screen debut, it’s heartbreaking to see a project like “Coyote vs. Acme” meet such an unfortunate fate. The film, which seemed promising with its star-studded cast and intriguing premise, was a labor of love for everyone involved. Cena’s words resonate deeply, as he acknowledges the complexities that come with working in this industry.
In an open discussion, John Cena shared insights into his role in the film “Coyote vs. Acme,” a project that notoriously failed to launch following Warner B Bros. Discovery’s decision to halt it.
Addressing TheWrap, I shared my thoughts on the film, stating that in my opinion, the team behind it truly delivered a “solid piece of cinematic work.” Everyone might have their unique viewpoints, but I wholeheartedly believe they produced a good movie.
Cena stated, “There’s a great deal in it, and everyone sees things differently.” He continued, “We don’t actually own the film, which is a challenge in this industry because you put so much passion into it. Director Dave Green and everyone else involved, we believed we made a good movie.”
As a devoted admirer, I find myself expressing what John Cena conveyed: I wished the movie could have had its moment, but deep down, I acknowledge that the decision to shelve it was probably the best course of action for me to accept and move forward.
“Cena expressed that, given an opportunity, he would have enjoyed viewing it. However, as one individual, his opinion doesn’t carry much weight. If the project was put aside, he suggested it might have been due to sound business reasons or valid concerns. He added that if, in retrospect, the movie was shelved for any other reason, he would feel deep remorse and embarrassment about its legacy.”
“I need to trust the journey. The film holds a special place for me, my feelings are deeply invested in it, but ultimately it’s someone else’s vision and they’re free to make decisions as they see fit.”
What happened to Coyote vs. Acme?
The movie titled “Coyote vs. Acme” was helmed by Dave Green and penned by Samy Burch (with contributions from James Gunn and Jeremy Slater on the story). This production took place in February 2022, initially slated for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023. However, due to decisions made by Warner Bros. Discovery in April 2022, the film’s scheduled release date was withdrawn.
In November 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to postpone releasing a film at a cost of approximately $30 million for tax purposes. This was a contentious decision since the same movie strategy had been employed in previous films like Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt.
As a gamer, I was bummed when I heard that the highly anticipated movie, Coyote vs. Acme, faced a lot of criticism from the public. But, in a surprising turn of events, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to give its filmmakers the chance to shop the movie around to other studios. Unfortunately, despite receiving some offers for the film, Warner Bros. Discovery ultimately decided not to move forward with it, leaving the project unproduced and fans like me disappointed.
