In a recent conversation, Joe Locke, who last appeared on screen in Marvel’s Agatha All Along series, disclosed that deciding to end Heartstopper with a movie isn’t a creative choice but rather stems from the team’s busy schedule. He further mentioned that they will start filming the movie “soon,” implying a potential release for the project as early as 2026.

According to Locke’s interview with The Playlist, he mentioned that due to the lengthy production period required for a series, it would have been challenging to gather everyone together for five years. By then, there might not have been a need for the project. Therefore, they concluded that the best way to produce it this year was to make a film instead, as it requires less time commitment. Yet, they could still pour the same affection and attention into the characters and storyline.

Later, Joe Locke emphasized the advantages of wrapping up Heartstopper with a film, saying, “It adds a sense of epicness, a more dramatic conclusion, and provides the perfect finale. I’m genuinely thrilled to begin filming, and let me tell you, the script is fantastic.

The nominee for both Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, Locke, stated that they will begin production on their project “very soon.” Although this doesn’t give us an exact release date, if filming starts early, it’s likely that we might see the Heartstopper movie premiere in 2026.
