Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Tragic’ Exit From Todd Haynes Movie Addressed by Producer

As a long-time admirer of Todd Haynes and his unique storytelling abilities, it is truly disheartening to witness the unfortunate turn of events surrounding his latest project. The loss of Joaquin Phoenix, a talented actor whose chemistry with Danny Ramirez could have undeniably ignited the screen, is a significant blow to this promising romance.

Christine Vachon, a producer for Todd Haynes’ gay-themed film, has spoken out about Joaquin Phoenix’s unexpected departure from the production.

Previously, Phoenix was set to act alongside Danny Ramirez in Haynes’ upcoming romantic film, which tells the story of two men engaged in a sexually charged relationship as they journey away from Los Angeles during the 1930s.

Phoenix is said to have abruptly left the filming location five days prior to when production was due to start in Guadalajara.

What did Christine Vachon say about Joaquin Phoenix’s departure from Todd Haynes’ movie?

At the San Sebastian Film Festival, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Vachon expressed, “The facts regarding the situation are essentially public knowledge. If I had juicy details, believe me, I’d share them, but I don’t. It was heartbreaking. What saddens me the most is that Todd Haynes, who is 62, has a limited number of films left to create in his lifetime. In my opinion, he’s one of the most exceptional film artists of his era.

“The idea that his time was wasted and that a movie is not a result of those years of working closely with Joaquin, that is the tragedy to me and that I can’t get over. We, as a cultural community, lost an opportunity to have another movie by Todd Haynes. That is just criminal.”

The movie appears to be in a lull since Phoenix decided to part ways with it, despite him not explicitly explaining his decision to abandon the project.

At the 2024 Venice Film Festival last week, Phoenix was questioned regarding the topic while he was publicizing Joker: Folie á Deux.

In simpler terms, Phoenix explained to reporters that if he were to express his personal viewpoint on the current situation, it wouldn’t be beneficial since the other creatives aren’t present to contribute their thoughts as well. Therefore, he chose not to voice his opinion.
