Joaquin Phoenix Wanted to do Joker Broadway Show Before Joker 2

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and the transformative power of performances, I must admit that the concept of a Joker Broadway show was tantalizingly intriguing. The idea of Joaquin Phoenix, who masterfully embodied Arthur Fleck in the 2019 Joker, taking his character to the stage for an immersive, intimate experience was a dream that seemed too good to be true.

Before the tremendous 2019 success of the movie “Joker”, actor Joaquin Phoenix entertained ideas about reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, yet in an entirely new medium or format.

What was the Joker Broadway show going to be about?

In an interview with Variety, Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix shared a memory from just before wrapping up the production of Joker. Phoenix recounted that he had a dream where he was playing the character of Fleck on stage, making jokes and singing, which mirrored Fleck’s aspirations in the 2019 film.

I remember Todd whispering words of encouragement to me over my headset from the sidelines. With an exhilarating rush, I jumped out of bed, eagerly phoning him to propose a gaming session together.

After that vision, the duo pondered over expanding Fleck’s tale for the Broadway stage. Yet, Phillips swiftly understood it wasn’t feasible due to the extensive time commitment required, even before the onset of COVID-19.

Upon careful consideration, we found out that approximately four years are needed to create something similar. Plus, considering Joaquin’s schedule, would he be willing to dedicate six months every year for this performance night after night onstage? This led us to ponder the idea of staging it at the Carlyle as a more intimate event. However, unfortunately, COVID-19 arrived and hindered our plans.

As I eagerly await the release of Joker: Folie à Deux, I can’t help but reflect on how the original concept has evolved over time. Part of what makes this sequel a unique musical adventure is its focus on the blossoming romance between Fleck and Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, a role brilliantly brought to life by none other than Lady Gaga.

Phillips inquires, “What’s the point of doing something if it doesn’t keep you on edge?” He confesses his fascination with risk, explaining that it can cause restlessness and even hair loss. However, it’s the adrenaline that fuels him.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to release in theaters on October 4, 2024.
